Yaoi (やおい), also known as Boys' Love ('BL ビーエル, bīeru), is a Japanese genre of fictional media focusing on relationships between male characters⚣. Originally, it was aimed at a female audience and was usually created by female authors, but it has since influenced many authors and reached out to other audiences.
Shōnen-ai (also spelled shounen ai) is also closely related to yaoi with the exception of a few minor differences, although both genres are Boy's Love (BL). Shōnen-ai focuses on a relationship's emotional and romantic side more so than the physical one.
Bara (薔薇, "rose") materials are created primarily by men who identify as gay and for the same audience. Typically, the characters are more muscular in the visual style. Plotlines may relate to what homosexual men experience, whereas the previous two relate to what women may like.
