Synopsis[]
The little master son of an earl, Luan, while wandering in the forest, met a boy his age. He fell in love with a sweet and kind boy, although he does not know his name. Gradually he began to neglect his training as a successor.
Characters[]
Luan Marcerion[]
The second son of a count who felt he had to undergo rigorous training as a replacement for his brother. As a child he found studying difficult, and did not enjoy playing the cello. Writing, sword-fighting, and horse riding similarly left him frankly upset. Luan felt bad after giving wrong advice to a boy he met in the forest who was also the first person of his age he could speak to. Presently, Luan is not particularly interested in what others have to say, Luan does not even recall a flower store that he bought a bouquet from. In having people gathered, Luan is searching for a specific individual.
Luan's Friend[]
Meeting Luan as a child, he passed him a handkerchief to wipe his tears with. Addressing how it often gets dark at night, he advised Luan return home. Sitting beside him, he said it was scary being alone so would stay until Luan returned. His family ran a herbal shop where would head into the mountains for gatherings, where he wanted to become a herbalist when he grew up.
Asha[]
Luan's tutor who taught him when he was a child. Teaching Luan the cello, Asha stated as a noble he must learn at least one type of instrument. Asha mentioned that Shane had learned the violin. When Luan was neglecting all his lessons, Asha discusses with Herdic what they should do.
Shane Marcerion[]
Luan's eldest brother who was supposed to be the heir of the family. When his asthma worsened, Shane was unable to leave his bed. Enquiring about his brother's studying, at being asked to keep his dislike of it a secret, Luan loudly and gleefully announces to Asha that Luan is in his room. While Shane is happy and able to walk, it would seem the family still regards Luan as the heir which is something Shane is fine with.
Herdic[]
A member of the household who tended to Luan and his family. When Luan was a child he found he had spilled ink on his hand. While attempting to clean that, Herdic heard Luan state that he hated everyone. Aware that Luan was happy in heading outside, Herdic arranged with Asha to pretend they did not know anything until it caught the count's attention.
Luan's Father[]
The count, he is cheerful around his family and others. Picking up on the situation concerning Luan, he mentions he himself started succession training at the age of 5. Dining with his family, he enquires about the status of other regions during Winter. Concluding that he has been too weak on his children, he arranges for Luan to go to the Rius continent.
Luan's Mother[]
Like her husband she is affable and yet also similar in that ultimately she does not realize she is not paying much attention to Luan. Coming to understand this, she explains to her husband that since he is busy and just entrusts raising Luan to Herdic and Asha then it is understandable that Luan would be upset about being sent away.
Neo[]
Luan's friend's brother who searches for him when he does not return home. Asking who Luan was, he cautioned him against talking to strangers.
Prones[]
It was arranged for Marquis Prones to raise Luan when he was brought to Rius.
Story[]
On a throne, Luan awaits a line of people. While one such person is friendly, Luan simply calls for the next. A man who runs the largest flower shop in town has heard Luan is seeking an individual with great plant knowledge. Where Luan has seen hundreds of people, he thinks how no one looks like "the one" at all. Looking to one person, Luan considers how he is the same age as him, yet would need to think twice if he intends to deceive him. Luan wonders what the person he has in mind is doing now.
It is recalled how as a child, Luan had gotten a sentence wrong again. As his tutor observed his writing, Luan considered his eldest brother, Shane Marcerion. A year ago Shane's asthma worsened and doctors stated that his illness began to manifest further symptoms. Where Luan was a child he sobbed for his brother to not die. Feeling deceived when he was only seven, Luan was informed he needed to study diligently to replace him. Thinking back, Luan would feel Shane was truly a cunning fellow. Luan envisions Shane appearing ill one moment, only to enjoy being tended to a moment later.
As Shane is fed by servants, he enquires about Luan's studies having heard from Asha about that. When Luan requests that his brother keep his dislike of studying a secret, Shane loudly calls for Asha. As Asha came to retrieve Luan for his music lesson, Shane laughed for him to cheer up. From playing the cello, poorly, to writing documents, Luan weeped how this was supposed to be Shane's job. While practicing with a sword, Luan felt he wanted to sleep like Shane, and roll on the grass too. Disliking horse riding, Luan also did not want to write a critique of a book as another assignment.
After completing a document, Luan accidentally spills the ink well over it. Luan concluded that Shane was just pretending to be ill and passing all the responsibilities in his shoulders. Feeling his parents did not even hear a word he said, Luan thought they were just worrying about Shane and it was the same for all the servants, tutors, and knights. As Herdic tried to wipe the ink from his hands, Luan announced that he hated everyone.
Running out to the forest, Luan secluded himself as he cried. A boy his age was passing by and asked Luan if he was good.[1]
