Temper My Blade is a manhua published by AC.QQ. In a fantasy historical setting after his family is murdered Yue Jue is trained in cultivation by his celestial master Ji Kongying. This is in preparation to become a sheath to his blade, whilst he would like to become a blade himself. Other characters are conscious of a link to a past war that devastated the three realms and wonder about Kongying's intent as he assists with Yue's progression whilst his affections towards him grow. Missing people are linked with demons in the area and Luoyu knows from memories contained in his blood that Yue has the essence of Tai Chu, a large golden dragon within him. A prequel series is Zhi Zi Zhi Jian.

Yue Jue[]
Rescued as a child from demons his memory lapses cause him to remember that he was saved ten years ago. At 18 the three trials of the adult ceremony begin and Yue decides on testing for the offensive blade since he feels that is cooler. Restraining a disciple Yue questions how he can speak ill of his master. He uses the sword of Xuyu mountain as a hidden weapon and Yue does not care about fighting methods so long as he wins. Unable to swim, after being rescued he is announced as the fourth blade guard to become SS-rank. Yue states a dislike for others touching him and that he hates reading the most where he feels dyslexic. However Yue feels he is not dumb just too lazy to memorize stuff he does not like yet Yue is quite capable of reciting what he has learnt. At ease in the exam since he knows the answers, Yue is thankful his master had his back in helping him learn. Believing that Kongying would never hurt him Yue thinks if he could choose someone to be his blade it could only be Kongying. Able to become comically irritated Yue feels betrayed when his friends leave him and that he should be rewarded for passing the exam. Considering it kind of an honor for a man to get injuries Yue feels being a sheath is different. Equating it to mean being weak and obedient Yue does not feel comfortable with that deeming it shameful and undignified. Left to study Yue feels being told that he is not ready and concerns about him being hurt means that he is being underestimated. Assisting Chu and Yuan in leaving the mountain Yue found another exit off it when he arrived at the mountain at age eight. He voices this was a perk of being a rambunctious kid and that even heaven becomes hell if he cannot leave when he wants. Able to recognise an item made by demons Yue wonders whether the traffickers themselves are demons after noticing them react to this knowledge. Being a distraction, Yue escapes and thinks he will get master to kill all the sheath traffickers. Setting a trap he has ice and fire spells ready and leaving a roof weak enough for a trafficker to fall through Yue has a third trap of piercing icicles waiting below for the trafficker to fall on. He feels it is others as well that underestimate him because he is a sheath.
Ji Kongying[]
The lord of Xuyu mountain, a celestial master who is considered a god responsible for the realms of mortal and immortal disciples. Calling himself Yue's master ten years ago he questioned whether Yue wanted to study cultivation under him so he can kill demons and avenge his murdered family. Noting that demons seem drawn to Yue's blood Kongying thought he would have to get stronger to survive. Dressing Yue and brushing his hair, based on Yue's physical condition Kongying feels he should attend the sheath classes having decided from the moment he saw him that would be the case. Seeing that Yue has cuts on his face he asks who did it and announces he will help him get even. Doting on Yue in public as well Kongying intends to ask Zi to get Yue another set of clothes and checks if he is hungry. Justifying it Kongying says that Yue is his disciple and if he does not look good it reflects poorly on him. What Kongying says to others goes and if someone disagrees they are to defeat him and replace his position. Washing Yue Kongying states he does not like him smelling like other people. Supporting Yue in his goal of passing the blade guard test Kongying has highlighted the key points for him in books to assist Yue. Aware that Yue has Tai Chu blood Kongying means for him to never have any weaknesses that others can take advantage of. His powers include being able to enter dreams where Kongying takes measures to ensure Yue passes his sheath exam. Concerned that Yue would get injured if he took the blade exams Kongying simply will not allow him to get hurt. Since Yue desires it so, once he becomes a qualified sheath Kongying will keep his promise and show him how to become a blade. Kongying acts independently when the need arises in attending important meetings and is extremely attentive to Yue to a possessive degree. It stems from affection and wanting the best for him but also having Yue all to himself. He is intellectually and magically more than capable of assisting Yue and keeping him safe from harm.

Luoyu[]
Stating to the divine master Kongying that he can protect Yue for now but not forever, Luoyu says it will be like three hundred years ago. Arranging a meeting with Tianqing he raises what if Kongying received the blood of Tai Chu which is a power that leads to madness. He suspects Kongying wants power more than anything then that he hates them and wants them all to die. Three hundred years ago they broke the most important person to Kongying and Luoyu feels people's emotions do not diminish. He proposes that Tianqing become his blade guard. Luoyu was close with Tianqing's parents and after biting him he acquires information on his emotions and a memory of what recently happened from his blood. Vouching for Cheng when he shows himself to be a demon Luoyu demonstrates Cheng is his sheathe and builds his case to keep him alive that there is no sheath in this world that he cannot tame, no matter how strong or fierce. Further that as only sheaths they are destined to submit to blades. The display seemed to be an act to demonstrate his prowess over sheaths of which Yue is one and a means of persuading others that Yue should attend a meeting where Kongying was against it. Wearing a mask he led what others saw as demon traffickers and then Luoyu led the search to find such demon traffickers.
Tianqing[]
Overall authoritative and dependable, as a teacher Tianqing informs Mao Zhang of group Xun, Gengchen year that he has attained a sheath grade C and that he can move onto the next round. With that done and the sun setting Tianqing thinks he can go and eat now before finding Yue arrive for the exam. Guiding him right away Tianqing knows him as the celestial master's disciple and desires to see the quality of the only sheath created by that monster. Shouting for Yue to watch out when Tai Chu appears, Tianqing speaks to Kongying when he arrives that he did not need to personally step in for something like this and that they could handle it. Stunned at Kongying declaring Yue an SS-rank member although Tianqing feels others will notice with no one able to physically challenge Kongying's decision Tianqing proceeds to congratulate the divine master for receiving three outstanding students. He was listening in on the meeting between Kongying and those present at Sanshan island. His parents died during the centurial wars and he is noted as loyal to Kongying and so biased against Luoyu. Curious about his words that the future of the three realms depends on him Tianqing does head to meet Luoyu. Having stayed by Kongying's side for around a hundred years Tianqing is questioned whether he thinks his master is trustworthy. Dismissing most of the concerns as preposterous Tianqing leaves judging the interaction with Luoyu a waste of time. He joins Kongying with others where he urges an investigation of the demon's base since they finally have a lead. Tianqing is trusted to do that. Seeing that Cheng is a demon he never expected the demon king who caused such bloodshed in the three realms to be Luoyu's sheath yet has defensive magic ready.
Xia Yubing[]
Called the most beautiful woman in the world Xia is the eldest princess of the country of Xialan. She is one of the four people to pass the blade guard preliminary trials. Asking master Ren Tianqing whether Xuyu mountain is normally this chaotic Xia wonders whether SS-ranks are determined simply because people say so. Referring to Yue being announced as one Xia considers him an artificial SS-rank member. Sitting it she considers the exam so boring that she fell asleep.
Yu Zhinuan[]
The young master of Yongwu island, one of the territories under Sanshan island. Having attained an SS rank he informs his father, Chengfeng and receives his favourite food of dried shredded squid. Finding Yue he states that everyone has limited energy and if both blade and sheath exams are practiced for then one will fail at both. Saying that Morality of the Sheath does not require any studying, Zhinuan could recite that by the age of five. During the exam he recognises the gossamer worm that the examiner has placed on Yue and calls the examiner over to request he read a smudged question to him. Accordingly this distraction removes the examiner as the manipulator of the water magic troubling Yue. He does this in an attempt to befriend Yue on his father's direction.
Ren Lu[]
Achieving an 'SS' grade and thus a once in a hundred years prodigy, Ren answers he does not belong to a sect. Taking the sheath exam he meets Yue again, he is the first student ever to receive grade SS for both blade and sheath exams. Of few words he can come across as condescending but he still tips Yue off that something is amiss for him in his examination.
Ye Liuren[]
Liu is the second brother who has already mastered sword control. After Yue assaults someone Liu throws his sword into his back and calls for it to return when it is deflected. In a fight Liu thinks he cannot rely on physical skills to defeat Yue since whilst he has better control Yue's speed is unmatched. He achieves an 'A' grade on the stone test yet figures he could have gotten a 'S' grade were he not injured. Liu was motivated to fight to defend the honour of his master. Concluding that Yue had used demonic arts to nullify the control of his blades and have them turn around and fly at him Lui wonders if his master has a plan for him and Kongying.
Shen[]
Intervening in a fight between Yue and Liu she is recognised as the celestial maiden. She is saving Yu and requests that he does his best on the test.
Yao[]
The third best teacher at blade school, she complies with request to look after Yue which means following the lead to persuade Yue to take the sheath test rather than the blade one she runs. Yao was keen for Ren to become her first disciple having been on the lookout for a prodigy.
Chu[]
She is rescued by Yue after a man tried to make her his sheath. Later she seeks out Yue since she requires help in leaving the mountain. She cries as Chu states that her mother died years ago and Chu must head back to see her gravely ill father before it is too late. At first she leaves once it is revealed her father lied and that she was to take to place of her brother who caused a fight and was held to ransom. After her father is taken hostage Chu surrenders herself on the condition that the traffickers let her friends go. With Yuan wounded and herself bound by a chi sealing chain Chu takes a trafficker's sword meaning to end her own life if he does not allow her to heal Yuan. Believing Yue to have been captured Chu feels no one can save her now, no one but herself.
Yuan[]
After finding that Chu was rescued by Yue she reveals her newly attained status of being a grade B blade. Together with Chu they find Yue since they need help in leaving the mountain, Yuan says she will replay the debt with interest. With Chu upset Yuan comforts her that she will do everything she can to break her out of Xuyu mountain. Yuan fights to defend the three of them from sheath traffickers.
Wang Mao'er[]
An acquaintance of Yue's who was thought of as a candidate to copy down all Yue's notes for him. Before the exam he feels Yue looks like a ghost and wonders if he ran off to a brothel last night then raises that he did not even take them with him. Along with Gousheng and Yanggao he finds Yu to inform him of his test involving a stone giant and that he passed it. With a third exam in three days Mao'er thinks to have some fun before then. Although Yue is keen for them to do so Mao'er remembers his own position compared to Yues and whilst not worried about being sold out he does take into account Kongying's reaction.
Yu Chengfeng[]
Happening upon Luoyu biting Tianqing he intervenes by expressing non-surprise to see Luoyu performing such an act. Framing it as perverted Cheng questions if Luoyu's partner at home is unable to satisfy him to do such a thing. Aware that Luoyu is already partnered Cheng states it is unethical to meddle with other blade guards. Feeling that meeting Zhinuan even once would make him weak, doing so he is dismissive of Zhinuan's acquired SS ranking since he is still only a sheath. Changing his tone he wants Zhinuan to befriend Yue since Cheng suspects he has inherited the foreign blood hence why Yue was arbitrarily declared a grade SS student. Seeking him out in person Cheng possesses a prominent horn atop his head and seen as a demon seemingly without memories, Muxiao Ri is following his master's orders and has something for Yue. Able to catch the first round of Kongying's shadow swords Cheng responds with fire, once he gets rid of Konying then no one can get in his way. He is powerless to escape being bound and skewered by further swords before he is rescued by his blade, Luoyu. Apparently trained to be the perfect sheath Cheng answers that Luoyu is his master.
Yu[]
Trafficking sheaths after capturing them he identifies Yue as at least an SS rank from his blood. Pursuing and meaning to torture Yue to have him co-operate he becomes trapped and falls into spiked icicles. Along with his fellow traffickers Yu did not treat sheaths as humans rather as products.
Tai Chu[]
The snake of the world's rebirth that resembles a very large golden dragon with six wings. Appearing to Yue after he was wading through a pond Tai Chi could communicate and saw Yue as the inheritor of the blood of Tai Chi and flew into his chest. Legends say the named blood is the power that created this world. It can reverse order and topple the three realms, even sever the connection between cause and effect.
Story Introduction[]
Kongying doting on Yue
As a child Yue Jue's family had been killed by demons and he was taken in for training under Ji Kongying. Now eighteen Yue and Kongying are close and he wonders if this is how all masters treat their disciples. Attendants enter the room where Yue is being clothed for the adult ceremony and Kongying asks Yue if he knows which class he wants to test for, the offensive blade or the defensive sheath. Yue opts for the blade route and takes part in a fight with Liu before the exam which is broken up with Shen's arrival.
The test involves placing one's hand on a large stone and meditating until it glows. Yue passes out after a vision shows someone resembling his master placing a seal on him after his parent's were killed. With his master saying Yue could unlock his chi if he becomes a sheathe Yue considers it. Overseeing a man attempt to force a woman to become his sheathe by way of making a pact Yue intervenes. A woman named Yuan returns to tell Chu she passed and is a grade B blade. For the next part of the sheathe test Yue steps into a pond where a large golden dragon emerges. Overlooking the world it is noticed that Tai has awakened and Yi leaves even when Shi asks him not to. Back on earth the dragon speaks to Yue that as the inheritor of the blood of Tai Chu he is to receive him. After Yue falls into the water he is rescued by Kongying who comes to his aid and proclaimed an SS rank by Kongying with no one able to challenge his arbitrary decision. That makes four SS candidates for this year where there is only supposed to be one every century.
Kongying is wondering how Yue broke Liu's hundred blades with no ability to use chi force as Yue wonders what the dragon was that rushed out the pool since he thinks it went into his chest. Placing his hand around Yue's mouth Kongying says he is not allowed to talk about this from now on, only the two of them know about this. He helps Yu with reading through materials that will be on the test and recommends Ethics of a Blade Guard for starters. Ziyu enters to inform the celestial master that representatives from Sanshan Second Island have requested a meeting. Kongying replies for them to meet him at the sword conference in Pagoda.
Liu discusses Yue's apparent demonic abilities with his master and they plan to end their teacher student relationship. At the meeting Kongying hears that those at Sanshan witnessed the strange occurrence in the sky, a same one that happened three hundred years ago. The demon clan has also been stirring lately. Yue wakes to Wang Mao'er and realizes his time to copy his notes is running out. After the meeting adjourns Luoyu says to Tianqing that the future of the three realms depends on him and suggests a place for them to meet. Kongying has overheard this but states there is nothing to be concerned about so long as Yue is kept safe. Overall attendants feel Kongying may want the strange blood to himself.
Arriving back Kongying sees a minor error in Yue's notes so proceeds with the punishment. He is adamant that Yue is going to be his only blade guard and that he is not allowed to be anyone else's. The punishment includes binding and blindfolding Yue and having him answer exam related questions as a means of learning. Kongying says that many are against them and Yue must excel on the test tomorrow. Remembering himself as a child Yue recalls his master finding him as he was destined to become someone else's blade guard on account of his blood. Crying over it, Kongying says Yue had a nightmare and he will be easily manipulable if he breaks down so easily.
By sunset Luoyu is waiting for Tianqing who has arrived to his meeting place and Nian Xi is asked to bring water. Luoyo wonders if Kongying is after the blood of Tai Chu. Three hundred years ago this power sent the three realms into bloody turmoil. Tianqing leaves after Yu joins them and the latter hears that Zhinuan has arrived for the trials. Luoyu uses a blood reading spell to view Tianqing's memory of Yue before the dragon Tai Chu. Chengfeng hears that Zhinuan has received a grade SS on the qualification exam yesterday, there are no more than ten in all the territories of Sanshan island combined. Zhinuan is tasked by Chengfeng of befriending Yue since he was elevated to a grade SS student.

As Konhying washes the ink off Yue he is worried that Yue only remembers the text for his exam and has not internalized the teachings. By morning after seeing Mao'er, Yue steps into his exam area and speaks to Lu and Zhinuan before the exam begins. During it the examiner uses a water based magic to place a gossamer worm onto Yue, which is used by demons to train their slaves. A final question on the exam was added by the Sanshan island alliance in order to imprison the person who is as arrogant as the one three hundred years ago of which Yue is answering. Yue finds himself in a tranquil world where Kongying is who states it is not a dream rather Yue is now his sheath. Told not to think about becoming a blade anymore, Yue is instructed to be a sheathe to Kongying's blade and form a pact. Bitten by Kongying, Yue thinks how is this different to what demons do and as he prepares to give himself Yue awakens back in the exam hall. The examiner thinks that Kongying is good at training sheaths for Yue to awaken from the spell induced illusion. Yue does not suspect the examiner though since with that power to enter the subconscious he would have replaced master long ago.
With Yubing seemingly experiencing a nightmare both Yue and Zhunuan guess that the bonus question was a trap that caused hallucinations of those important to them. After the exam Yue intends to celebrate with Mao'er yet Kongying finds them and raises how improper it is that Mao'er as a blade has his arm around his sheath, Yue. After they depart Yue would like to take the blade exam yet Kongying questions if he does not want to become his sheath. Yue is not sure what Kongying means that his hand was full of injuries with not a single finger spared when he voices concern over his wellbeing. Wishing him luck in the remaining exams Kongying intends to investigate disappearances and will not be back tonight. Yue decides he wants to come too to ascertain if he is of any use to Kongying as a sheath. Kongying replies useful or not Yue is his sheath and advises him to focus on practicing his sword skills.
Deciding to remain committed to studying to remain on the path of becoming a blade to avenge his parents, Yue finds Yuan and Chu have sought him out as they arrive in Xuyu mountain. Yuan states that Chu's father is gravely ill however Yue reveals that it is impossible to leave since Xuyu mountain heavily guarded to protect the students. Yuan's words that Yue is the celestial master's disciple but is too afraid to leave and only good for keeping the bed warm resonate and Yue says he will help them down the mountain. Using his blood to open a weak section of the barrier, Luoyu is following them and tastes the blood on the ground to learn of Kongying's movements.
Reaching Chu's home her father lied about being ill yet requires help since Chu's older brother hurt someone and he will not be released unless three hundred is given in silver. Yue is aggrieved that the father is prepared to sacrifice his daughter as a sheath to save a blade son useless enough to be in his predicament. Continuing Yue follows up that Chu got into the best school in three realms and queries if the father does now know value when he sees it. Chu decides to leave but her father is taken hostage and Yue wonders if these are the traffickers related to the disappearances of students. Yuan is wounded and Yue thinks the traffickers see Chu as a sheath like merchandise. Feeing they definitely will not kill him Yue means to use that to his advantage against the greater number of skilled opponents. After trapping Ye he returns with Yue chained and another trafficker comments that Yi disappeared. It is Yue himself disguised and although he stabs one Yue is captured by the traffickers.
Rescued by Luoyu without knowing who he is Yue is handed a scroll that he is not to tell anyone else about not even Kongying. A gathering arrives on floating swords and investigate the demon base in the village whilst Kongying takes Yue back alone to wash other's scent off him. Kongying feels Yue is trying to manipulate him by acting passionate and subservient and that he is just like an unspecified him in a way. Certain that Yue will run away as soon as Kongying chooses to believe him Kongying thinks he should make Yue his right now. After Yue faints from the injury on his foot Kongying sets about healing it.
Tianging among others see the village burned with those behind the act attempting to hide evidence and the masked leader of the demon traffickers is shown to be Luoyu. After Yue awakens he hears from Kongying that whilst Chu, Yuan, and his sword are missing he is safe and that matters most to Kongying. He tells Yue to not have any contact with Luoyu, not to talk to him or even look at him if he can help it. Kongying replies Luoyu has ulterior motives for looking at Yue and that blades dream of having his blood. Zi is suddenly thrown through the door and she warns of a demon having broken in. She is referring to Cheng who has a prominent demon horn and others gathered also note his red hair and view him as the demon king, still alive. One hundred years ago they watched as the demon king killed himself. After fending off attacks Cheng is assailed by Kongying's shadow swords. Kongying mentions if Cheng even looks at Yue again then he will kill him.
Cheng attacks Kongying to get him out the way but he is bound with a greater barrage of swords flying towards him. Luoyu is present and defends Cheng by using a plant based spell to absorb the swords. Stating that Cheng is his sheath Luoyu requests his forgiveness. Kongying is aware that three hundred years ago demons coaxed sheaths of the three realms into a rebellion and that history will repeat itself if they do not kill Cheng. With Luoyu stating Cheng to be his sheath and showcasing his submissiveness Yue wonders how that can be the demon king. Kongying speaks to Yue that this is why he said to stay away from Luoyu as he was already every sheath's worst nightmare hundreds of years ago. The matter has nothing to do with one being a demon but the status of being a sheath. Luoyu says that those gathered think Cheng is an enemy who could betray him. In response to that Cheng stabs himself with the view that he is an enemy of master. Kongying dismisses the act as boring that Luoyu would come all this way to show off his supposedly perfect sheath and that he can leave now.
Returning Yue's sword that Luoyu supposedly chanced across Kongying takes it then reiterates that he can leave now. Luoyu still has the matter of the disappearing sheaths that led to the demon's base and wants to discuss a plan of action after his and Tianqing's investigations. Tianqing produces the horned mask that the boss of the traffickers wore. Yue would also like to join in the discussion to take place at the sword theory pavilion feeling that something is off about the mask. Whilst Kongying forbids him from going anywhere Luoyu supports Yue's presence since he is a witness. Enthusiastic about helping to catch the leaders of the traffickers, Luoyu also adds that Yue must attend even if it is to repay him for saving his life. Kongying counters that Yue has an exam tomorrow and needs to rest having lost a lot of blood. Luoyu responds that this matter concerns the safety of the three realms and Kongying cannot hide his own sheath for selfish reasons. When Luoyu's sheath Cheng was questioned he was willing to do what it takes and Tianging adds that Kongying is also over-protective of him.
As others also vouch for Yue to attend the meeting with it only natural for a sheath to help his blade, Yue himself takes Kongying's hand and assures him he has made a full recovery. Luoyu expands on that by saying with Yue himself agreeing he will take it to mean Kongying gives his consent. Yue replies that he owes Luoyu his life and will definitely replay him but if Luoyu dares to harm his master he will not go easy on him even if he were to be a god. Yue adds furthermore that Luoyu only proved that his sheath would not betray him and Yue turns to whether Luoyu would join the demons. With the question including whether Luoyu will become an enemy of the three realms Luoyu finds it hilarious. He ends by saying to Yue that may he never find out what he did to him but does not explain what he means.

With three realms and mortal and immortal beings after the centurial wars there was a new law where all individuals involved with the strange occurrence must be strictly surveilled. A demon clan is after a strange blood since it has unique properties to all three realms including incredible breakthroughs in cultivation.
Xuyu mountain is cut off from the outside world on all sides. Besides wind, rain, and sunlight nothing enters or leaves on its own. The only entrance is guarded by blades and sheaths of grade S and above with permission required in order to pass. A back entrance comes in the form of a barrier being weak in an area.
There are two oceans inside the human body: blood maintains the body's physical functions and the second, chi allows the body to control the force of all things. A chi deficiency is caused by external factors that can leave one incapable of cultivation. The problem can be temporarily resolved by borrowing the chi form someone else's body as Yue does by gaining it from Kongying. Seekers are able to control chi and blood, if two people focus on one and study together before they are twenty their achievements are found to be much greater.
People are classified into sheaths and blades at birth where culture dictates that the former are lesser compared to blades.
