Shinigami wa Korosenai is a completed manga at seven chapters within one volume. It is written and illustrated by Mikkamita. First released in 2020, it has been serialized in Byō de Wakaru BL and published by Libre.

Synopsis[]

Since childhood Eiji has always had accidents that would have been fatal, but he always survived unscathed. Because he sees things that normal people don't see, he realizes that there's a mysterious shadow that always saves him. But what is it? So he decided to find out what this mysterious shadow was and wanted to thank that shadow. And to call him, he tried to jump off the balcony of his apartment. Here comes the handsome God of Death appearing before him. Will Eiji be able to thank him?

Ever since Eiji was a kid, there was a creature he really wanted to see. Lying unconscious on a hospital bed, Eiji awakened where he could see the shadowy figure before him. Reaching out, he took ahold of Caleb's fingers. Growing up, Eiji found himself the target of unexpected happenings, such as glass falling on him, yet he was also protected by the shadow. Having just avoided a sign falling on him, Eiji considers how he can live safely to this day. Having a need to see the shadow, to thank him, and concerned that the memories will fade. Eiji heads to the balcony. Although he considers his life may need to be in danger for the shadow to appear, Eiji then thinks what is he doing before abandoning such a notion. Blown back inside, checking, Eiji questions whether the entity that has always been by his side since he was a kid is Caleb. Feeling that Caleb must be something like a guardian, with a scythe displayed where it is said to take human souls, Eiji is not satisfied. Even when told Caleb cannot get along with humans, and to not try to kill himself again, Eiji shouts he does not want to understand. Not caring if Caleb is the god of death, Eiji announces he will repay him no matter what. Continuing to work as a cook, Eiji finds others cannot see Caleb. Noting how Caleb faithfully stays by his side, Eiji considers how he has such kind eyes. While Caleb said he did not need to eat, Eiji raises whether he can and has prepared dinner for him. Noticing a mark on Caleb's wrist, Eiji also requests that he remove his mask, upfront that he finds it scary. Concerned for Caleb's wellbeing, Eiji then asks him about shinigami having girlfriends or boyfriends, before feeling embarrassed at what he is talking about.

Caleb - Shinigami wa Korosenai

Before Eiji's bed, Caleb found a shadowy manifestation of his hand taken by him. Over the years, shadows had protected Eiji from a truck, falling glass, to covering his mouth when other shinigami were near. Blowing Eiji back into his room when he was at the top of his balcony, Caleb remains silent when asked how he got in. Then speaking for him to stop it, Caleb questions if Eiji did not try jumping off that balcony. Confirming he came because Eiji called, to be exact Caleb has come to stop him doing something dangerous. Telling Eiji he does not have to thank him, Caleb does not know what he mistook him for, but he is the god of death. The one who gathers human souls to bring them to the afterlife, Caleb is not supposed to interact with humans. Fading into a black shadow form, Caleb then seizes Eiji to say it would be troublesome for him if he died. Staring at Eiji and pointing out he was the one who called him, even threatened him not to disappear, Caleb then observes but now he is telling him to leave. While committed to observing Eiji, in one case Caleb is holding a cat. Speaking how the cat already wants to go, Caleb says he will send it off. After the cat peacefully fades into light, Caleb mentions he only engages with human souls, but if he can allow a tormented soul to go quietly then he will be happy to help. Even if it is a creature other than humans, Caleb is doing what he wants. Unwavering in saving Eiji, he protects him from a car. Asked what he would like to eat, Caleb answers an omelette. With Eiji staring at him, Caleb wonders what he is thinking, before considering if he is waiting for him to talk. Removing his mask by having it disappear into shadows, before Caleb became a shinigami he was a human. Having worked as a shinigami for hundreds of years, Caleb says now he has no memories of when he was a human, so unfortunately cannot introduce himself as Eiji did. His classification is Aether, which is the highest rank. Where Eiji was destined to die, Caleb swindled his fate to stay alive. Indifferent to his left arm having been severed off and missing, Caleb asks whether anything happened to Eiji when he was gone where he is more concerned for him. Caleb didn't think Eiji would act this way, he is not used to a man worrying about him like this.

Eiji's Colleague (1)[]

Working with Eiji at a cafe, he speaks how he has been hooked on ghost movies lately. After questioning whether Eiji is the type who believes in supernatural things such as ghosts or death gods, he replies he is not fun at all when ordered to get back to work. He is surprised at seeing a sign break off and fall down towards Eiji.

Eiji's Colleague (2)[]

Saying sorry to Eiji after a customer leaves, she feels responsible where the client was rude. She laughs at Eiji's comment that he is a guard dog.

Driver[]

Swerving to avoid Eiji in the road, this man asks if he is okay. Where Eiji apologizes for his carelessness, he remarks that was really dangerous before enquiring whether he is hurt.

Connor[]

Observing the building for a while, Connor thinks it is time for them to have a chat. Approaching who he calls Mr. Aether to speak how this is his area of jurisdiction, Connor asks what is Caleb doing here. Questioning how long will Caleb remain in this area, Connor asks further how long does he think this can be kept up. Where Eiji was kept alive, at the time Connor could not believe that an Aether turned against them. As a junior member, Connor mentions they must give this man's soul to the lord, or Caleb would be in danger. According to Caleb, Connor was the one who was going to push Eiji into the road. Told not to do that again, Connor begins protesting before registering that he is being observed by Eiji, where he breaks into a grin. Not knowing what he is looking at when asked by Caleb, after stating he has work to do so is going to go, Connor affirms he will not interfere with his work.

Lord[]

Depicted as a shining light, the Lord plays a sizeable role in the shinigami's role of gathering spirits. Apparently sentient, it can also directly communicate with the shinigami. The Lord is open to deals being made.

It has been a week since Eiji was unconscious, as a child he lies in a hospital bed. A humanoid shadow reaches towards him, Awakening, Eiji can see Caleb and touch his hand. Growing up, Eiji felt the shadow's presence near him. After finishing work at a cafe, Eiji is seemingly pulled away from the spot a heavy sign was set to fall. It is recalled how Eiji has been involved in hazardous situations before, where there was that dark shadow to defend him. As Eiji lies in bed it is 01:31 on the clock, with 09 as a date, with TU likely indicating Tuesday. Wanting to see the shadow and thank him before the memory fades, Eiji heads on the top of the balcony and asks if he is watching. While considering his need to see the shadow, Eiji also thinks this is not the way to go about it, so decides to not jump. Regardless, Eiji is blown back into his room, and then finds Caleb materialized as a human there.

A desire to thank him for his protection

Registering Caleb is the shadow, and god of death, Eiji is adamant he wants to repay him. When Caleb is not interested and begins to become a dark mist, Eiji also has a plan. Declaring that if Caleb wants to disappear, that he is going to jump, Eiji is then taken ahold of by him. Stating to let Caleb repay him, Eiji requests his name and shares his.[1] Waking up, Eiji finds the death god has remained and one night has passed. At work, Eiji defends his colleague from a rude customer. Glancing out the window, Eiji finds Caleb stood atop a building outside. Sleeping at night, Eiji notes Caleb has stayed faithfully near him, and while unsure how to act, he still wants to repay him. Walking, Eiji comes across Caleb with a cat. After Caleb helps the injured cat pass away peacefully, Eiji reflects how the death god also shows compassion.

Continuing his activities, Eiji contemplates on what he can do for Caleb, before he is pushed by a black hand from behind. Finding himself in the middle of the road with a car coming towards him, Eiji is pulled away by Caleb. After interacting with the driver, Eiji wonders why a death god like Caleb are always protecting him. At his residence, feeling that behind the mask Caleb must have a mouth, Eiji addresses whether he is capable of eating. It is not a matter of need or not regarding what is said, and Eiji stares at Caleb until he answers if he can eat. After making an omelette for him, Eiji asks if he and Caleb can eat together from now on. After removing his mask as requested, Eiji finds himself feeling uncomfortable for another reason.[2]

Remembering how Eiji was saved

Connor observes the residence from a rooftop. As Eiji speaks about getting to know Caleb better, he mentions details on himself. Sharing in turn, Caleb reveals he used to be a human yet does not have memories of that. Detailing the shinigamis, there is a hierarchy. There are three main categories: Aether, Raus, and Albus. The shinigamis will fight to reach the top, they compete for the greatest number of souls left to the gods by following predetermined rules. Addressing why Eiji's life is in danger, Caleb reveals that when he was six he was destined to die. While Caleb intervened, it means Eiji's soul in the eye of a shinigami is pleasant and so is vulnerable to all types of them. Connor joins Caleb on top a roof to say they must give this man's soul to the lord. After Caleb orders Connor to leave and not interfere, he agrees to but only after grinning at Eiji who he sees.

Preparing dinner, Eiji wonders what Caleb was talking about with who he assumes was another shinigami. Detecting that Caleb has arrived, Eiji is surprised to see his left arm missing. Nonchalant, Caleb answers it was because of a job and it is no big deal. Seeing that Eiji may want to say something, Caleb questions whether something happened when he was gone. Affirming he is not hurt, Eiji then wonders whether the shinigamis have girlfriends or boyfriends. Giving the matter some thought, Caleb replies shinigamis have no romantic feelings, also no appetite, or need for sleep. Finding that his face is red, Caleb asks if Eiji is sure he is going to be okay.

Bringing out natto, Caleb reacts to the smell of the fermented soybeans. Alarmed, Caleb questions why Eiji is approaching with it. While Eiji beams that the smell might be a little strong but it tastes good, and to not be afraid, Caleb dissipates and escapes to the rooftop.[3]
