Twittering Birds Never Fly is an ongoing manga written and illustrated by Kou Yoneda. First released in 2008, it has been serialized in ihr HertZ and published by Taiyo Tosho. When volume 1 was released it included the one-shots Don't Stay Gold, and Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo sezu.. Beginning in 2013, a number of drama CDs have been released. So far five have been made available.
The manga has been adapted into three anime films. The first film was named Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai: The Clouds Gather and concerned Yashiro and Doumeki which was released in 2020. Movie one covers up to volume 2, chapter 7 of the manga. The second anime film released was in 2021 which was Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai: Don't Stay Gold. This focused on other characters introduced in the manga namely Kuga and Kageyama.
There is a third planned movie titled Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai: The Storm Breaks which is scheduled for future release. This is to be a sequel to the first film where Yashiro and Doumeki resume their story as main characters.
Synopsis[]
Yashiro is the young leader of Shinseikai and the president of the Shinseikai Enterprise, but like so many powerful men, he leads a double life as a deviant and a masochist. Doumeki Chikara comes to work as a bodyguard for him and, although Yashiro had decided that he would never lay a hand on his own men, he finds there's something about Doumeki that he can't resist. Yashiro makes advances toward Doumeki, but Doumeki has mysterious reasons for denying. Yashiro, who abuses his power just to abuse himself, and Doumeki, who faithfully obeys his every command, begin the tumultuous affair of two men with songs in their hearts and no wings to fly.
Characters[]
Yashiro[]
Subject to abuse throughout his school years, Yashiro masochistically enjoyed the pain. Whilst he was friends with Kanji during school, they only remained that despite Yashiro desiring otherwise. He becomes the head of a yakuza organization that he manages and receives Chikara as a hired bodyguard. Whilst Yashiro presents a display of being happy, it is intermixed with feeling melancholic with him stating he is twisted and beyond repair. Yashiro was pleased with this seeing it as evidence that he was a good actor since no matter how messed up he may feel on the inside, it does not ever show on his face.
Chikara Dōmeki[]
He has passed the police employment examination and is 25. Coming into contact with Yashiro, he is hired as his bodyguard since he requires an income. Chikara intercedes on Yashiro's behalf in cases where he thinks he is in trouble and serves him dutifully carrying out his every whim. He prefers listening and observing rather than speaking and is attentive to details that others directly and indirectly reveal.
Kanji Kageyama[]
Serving as a student rep filling in for the school nurse, Kanji's interest in medicine would carry over to when he was an adult where he became a doctor. He tended to Yashiro's rope burns with band-aids and does want him to do well but sees him as a close friend. Kanji looks after Eishin when he moves in with him.
Eishin Kuga[]
Having a nickname of "mad dog", Eishin would perform beating duties for Yashiro and the yakuza before staying at Kanji's home.
Story[]
Beginning with Yashiro at school, he shows happiness at receiving band-aids from Kanji for rope burns he has sustained. Yashiro thinks how he gains the most exquisite pleasure from the injuries and feels he is a masochist. After Kanji's father's funeral, he and Yashiro discuss their future plans where Kanji announces that they are good friends.
Now heading the yakuza as an adult, Yashiro calls Kanji who is now a doctor to help stop Eishin going too far in assaulting a man in the streets. Eishin moves in with Kanji despite their opposite personalities. As Yashiro feels how he brought them together even though he liked them both, he meets Chikara when he is introduced as a suitable bodyguard.
They attend a meeting with other members of the yakuza as an upcoming battle of succession is underway. Yashiro finds that a woman waiting for Chikara is not his ex but his sister. Sharing details of his past, Chikara is angered when his sister reveals that he is impotent.
