Yaoi Wiki

Games on the Yaoi Wiki cover those on a variety of devices including computers, phones, and increasingly on gaming consoles. One of the formats that yaoi storylines can be depicted in, games can also have a bara aesthetic, as well as explore the emotional aspects that are prominent in shounen-ai series. Yaoi games are an underlooked area in comparison to other formats, yet there is a significant number of them which are often supported by particularly dedicated fanbases. Games are further distinguished in that they can be enjoyed across various different devices. That in addition to multiple storylines within one work, to the endless nature of gameplay easily makes games the most engaging means of viewing yaoi.

The list of Yaoi games that have been created are below. For the companies which focus on producing these games (including which companies make Yaoi games in English) please refer to the List of Yaoi Game Companies page.

Details on Yaoi Games[]

Foundations[]

Where print materials such as manga could be published, digital games would only come into existence when electronic devices did. Despite their recency, games are the most likely to be the foundation of a series after print materials including Chinese manhua and Korean manhwa, as well as webtoons. Since its inception as a game, DRAMAtical Murder has had manga and anime released in an indication of the impact games can have given the series notability.

Both a foundation, and addition to series, sometimes a manga series will release further materials such as drama CDs, where games can also be an option as a means of releasing further content. In Ten Count there were two games released after a drama CD, where one game introduced new characters to the series. While with some games the focus may be on solving puzzles for example, story lines are involved as well.

Out of all the formats, the art style of games can resemble anime the most particularly when cutscenes and moving images (gifs) are involved, however they have their own traits. CGs (large colored pictures) can provide some of the best visuals for a yaoi series that are not featured in other formats. Voice acting for all of the scenes can be another feature of games, with the possibility of text as well.

Genres[]

Games as a format is separate to series where characters may play games. In My Darling Signed In, characters play as avatars in an online game, an in-universe occurrence that is not connected to a real-world person physically playing a yaoi game.

Types of Games[]

The games themselves are mostly for the PC but a few games are available in other platforms as well. With phones being available as devices to play on, games are branching out into that area too. It has always been the case that yaoi games can be played on consoles. My Dangerous Life was available to play on Microsoft Windows in 2020, and was also released for the Nintendo Switch in 2022.

Strikingly, many yaoi related games are visual novels. Not related to book novels in any way, visual novels are a digital game where one story line option from several can be selected. Choices opted for influence the plot and character relations. Otome games that are targeted towards women would involve developing relationships with the characters as the story progresses. Many of the best known yaoi games are visual novel ones. In 2005 Togainu no Chi was released. This was followed by a sequel, where the game was also released on consoles such as the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. Similarly, once Sweet Pool was released in 2008 it formed an enduring appeal where games were released up to 2018.

As there are puzzle games, and simulator ones, there is some dramatic variation in terms of the play styles available in yaoi games. Where it is clear what to expect when viewing a manga and anime, from the types of devices the games be featured on, and the essentially many stories within one, yaoi games are the most varied material that a series can be shown in.
