This article features Yaoi drama CDs, which are also made for bara, and shounen-ai series. With this format, often drama CDs would be voice recordings of the characters as they experience the story they are a part of. Where all other formats are visually based, with images and text displayed to view events, drama CDs uniquely are audio based.

Drama CDs are the most common adaption of Japanese manga. When these print releases are usually the foundation of a yaoi work, the character voices can be heard in a drama CD. While one is a common number for the amount released, multiple drama CDs can be made available for a series, each which covers various chapters. They are often released over time, Given has had five drama CDs made available. As for how much of a material is covered for a series, it depends but usually reaches an established amount. The drama CD for Usagi no Mori covers the entirety of volume one for example.

Types of Drama CDs[]

Since manga was physically released, drama CDs were as well in the form of physical CD discs. The disc itself and the sleeve it was kept in may have featured unique art work for the series, which indicated which one it belonged to. In order to hear the audio drama the disc would have to be placed in a CD playing device.

The option of a drama CD physically playing remains however there are other methods of accessing audio dramas given advances in technology. A manga, to a drama CD, and then anime adaption is a common progression for sharing a series into additional formats, where Kyojinzoku no Hanayome illustrates that no format is a pinnacle to another, though. Beginning as manga, the Kyojinzoku no Hanayome anime was released on July 5, 2020 and completed in the same year on August 30, 2020. A drama CD was released after the anime had aired, on December 25, 2020. Not only was this a rare case of a drama CD being released after an anime, notably for Kyojinzoku no Hanayome it was one that was a sequel to continue the story.

Sequel series can have drama CDs released for each story. Where Hoshi to Harinezumi had one, a spin-off story from it titled Love Me Love My Dog which focuses on other characters also had its own drama CD made available.
