Yaoi Wiki

This article is the master list of Bara, Shounen-ai and Yaoi anime, which is hand-drawn and digitally created media originating from Japan. The list also includes donghua, which is Chinese animation originating from the titular country. Collectively, of all the formats that yaoi stories can be depicted in, anime is the most uncommon which the year of release sections display. While there are thousands of print releases such as manga available, the number of anime is in the very low triple digits where this article also covers background information on yaoi anime.

The list is in alphabetical order beginning with A and descends down to Z. The list concludes with series whose titles begin with numbers. The anime category is also available to view.

Details on Yaoi Anime[]

Foundations[]

Where many series originate as manga, occasionally there would be drama CD adaptions of the story where even more occasionally an anime could follow sometimes with the same voice cast. Tight-rope is an example of a series that began as a manga in 2007, before having a drama CD made available in 2009 and then an anime adaption in 2012. Although less common, it remains the same for light novels where a text based story, which may have a few images of the characters often on cover art, can be adapted into anime. Yes ka No ka Hanbun ka is one such example, from the light novel series that were released starting in 2013 an anime movie was released in 2020.

Series that were first released as games can also be adapted into anime episodes. The visual novel Taishou Mebiusline: Chicchai-san - You and I has been released on the PC and handheld gaming consoles such as the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Switch between 2012 and 2021, with anime episodes released in 2017 in between dates. While games most of all can resemble anime, particularly where the artwork, character appearances, and cutscenes are concerned, anime is a distinct format in its own right.

Along with the dramatic increase in webtoon production, that format is also leading into the creation of yaoi anime. The four episodes of Semantic Error at four minutes that was released in 2021 allows for the characters, world, and story to be depicted for a deeper understanding of the series, and for it to be shared with a wider audience. South Korean manhwa is becoming increasingly common, however anime production has yet to reach the same pace. Released in 2019, Partner's Territory has two episodes at six minutes each in an example of a manhwa being adapted into anime.

It is a similar scenario for Chinese manhua in terms of having fewer anime adaptions (called donghua), certainly when compared to Japanese works of which almost all yaoi anime are. For manhua adaptions to anime however, Ling Qi is a series with multiple episodes where each one is over twenty minutes in duration. For Chinese series beginning as novels, there is the Jie Yao anime that has been made also with greater coverage in its episodes.

After an anime has completed its airing, as with other series there may be additional animated movies made available. Once the twelve episodes of Sasaki to Miyano were concluded, the Sotsugyou-hen movie was released. Just as the Sasaki to Miyano manga series has a spin-off series titled Hirano to Kagiura which allows for a focus on other characters, that story also received its own anime movie adaption which was released on the same date. Taking place in the same universe, each own distinct story was able to be adapted into anime.

Often it is a print release that would be the foundation of a series, where anime could be made at later points. This is similar for games. It is rare that a series would have its foundations in anime, however Yuri!!! on Ice is one such example.

Genres[]

Yaoi Anime Genre Examples

Yaoi anime is not limited to any genre, where comedy (Wei, Kanjian Erduo La!), fantasy (Xiao Lu He Xiao Lan), and slice of life (Umibe no Étranger) series to name a few are covered. Romance series are the most covered, where relationships are also explored in many other genres too.

No

No.6 eschews the related yaoi genres where it opts for others

Similar to print materials, genres such as seinen and josei may have male relationships featured. Yaoi related themes can be seen in works that may not be expressly linked to the genre such as Kuro Gal ni Natta kara Shinyuu to shitemita. Some series may for any reason decline the yaoi genre in favor of others. As with the manga and light novels, the No.6 anime deliberately selects the drama and mystery genres given what takes place in the story, however it simply declines any labels such as yaoi, or even shounen-ai despite the very visible connection between the two leads and the central focus on it.

Types of Anime[]

For classifications, animated materials can be divided into OVAs, ONAs, to anime episodes and movies. An OVA (Original Video Animation) would have been made for television broadcast and for releasing on physical discs. Often featuring one or two episodes around an hour or under in length, OVAs were the most visible yaoi anime. The two OVA episodes of Tight-rope were each at thirty minutes, as was the single OVA episode of Kachou no Koi. Given changes in viewing series, an ONA (Original Net Animation) is a work released directly online, as Hyperventilation was.

The type of anime formed can depend on the country of origin, as well as the studio that creates it. Both Kyojinzoku no Hanayome (which began airing in 2020) and Maou Evelogia ni Mi wo Sasage yo (2021) are two examples of isekai anime by one studio. For both series, Studio Hokiboshi made nine episodes available each at six minutes in duration per episode. Mori no Kuma-san, Toumin-chuu. would follow suit in 2022, however is a series outside the isekai genre where different areas can be expanded into. These series coincide with a larger than usual proportion of isekai anime being released in general at a certain point in time. As for why other anime are made, it comes down to whoever makes them. The Gakuen Heaven media franchise developed anime to join the game, manga, and drama CD assets it was generating as it developed the character story events for its cast. Where Junjou Romantica was released, the author's other work Sekaiichi Hatsukoi was developed by the same anime based organizations. The Yuri!!! on Ice movie, and Ten Count anime could be regarded as completed works that are awaiting a release date, whenever there is a gap for a sports, and psychological series to be aired.

Xiao Lu He Xiao Lan 2nd Season

Various animation styles, stories, across multiple seasons

Unlike others, yaoi series being adapted into what is considered full anime seasons with an industry standard of twelve episodes is a recent development. Various different studios and production organizations are also involved in such works. Similar to what is expected with anime season durations, Sankaku Mado no Sotogawa wa Yoru is an anime released in 2021 by Zero-G with 12 episodes with each episode 23 minutes in length. Where anime can first be released as an ONA, later seasons such as the second season of Ling Qi can air on TV. The form an anime can take would not be overlooked, Given made history when it aired as the first yaoi anime on NoitaminAon, Fuji TV's anime programming block.

The duration of episodes, number, and the art style can be different on a case by case basis. While print materials can have an established format, there is a great range of story depictions found in anime. In each of the two minutes across the thirty episodes of Caramel Honey a combination of animated manga panels and anime is displayed. Very generally speaking, yaoi anime has come to be formed in various numbers of episodes of various lengths of time where all manners of depiction can continue to be featured. Japanese anime is coming to have series with a greater number of episodes. For series that release under twelve episodes with minutes in duration there is an increasing number to showcase the respective world and character of a series.
