Characters[]
Seiji Tajima[]
When a girl does not have enough for a vending machine, Seiji heads to pay the difference. When Shin does it first, Seiji states he sure is nice and says to let him give this good boy 10 Yen. Casually inviting him inside, Seiji shares he is having some barley tea. Having been a cop, Seiji quit where he is now at his parent's home having inherited the Tajima shop. Merrily saying to look that he is a shop's broke-ass old dude in their forties, Seiji thinks he would be snubbed at a machikon. Another unserious comment is wondering whether it would be nice to move onto dudes. While mentioning he is not like that, Seiji says there are some among his friends who he got hitched. Surprised to be kissed by Shin, having known him for 10 years Seiji never had any idea he liked him.
Shin Nakamoto[]
30 and 190cm tall[1], Shin claims he did not become a cop because Seiji did. Not overly forthright in showing expressions, Shin is shocked when Seiji comments about moving onto dudes. Having taken the remark seriously, Shin apparently does not absorb that Seiji meant nothing by saying it, and moves in to kiss him. If Seiji really is moving onto men then Shin says to choose him.
Chico[]
The name of Seiji's pet cat. White, she is friendly around others.
Girl[]
Experiencing trouble with a vending machine, she says 100 Yen was put in when asked. Understanding the prices have risen, the girl realizes she does not have enough. She is happy when Shin pays so she can acquire the drink she would like.
Motsu[]
At 53[2], Motsu does not like how hot it is every single day.
Maki[]
35[3], Maki greets others good morning. Asking Shin to take over for him, Maki also requests that he deliver a message on the way to the station. The message was for the machikon to be cancelled since he is going to a goukon with a nurse.
Tohru[]
At the mixer, Tohru asks Naohito if he is sure they do not have to pay. Surprised Seiji was a cop, Tohru inoffensively comments he does not look like one. Feeling Naohito is right that Seiji should try dating someone, Tohru mentions there are not many folk who would keep holding on for ten years. While Tohru is already dating Naohito he is happy to attend the mixer since Seiji asked.
Naohito[]
Telling Tohru that they are helping out the man-child Seiji who inviting them out of the blue the day before the mixer, he is shocked to hear someone told Seiji they had liked him for over 10 years. At hearing the person is a cop, Naohito is surprised he is here today. Having tried dating men because Seiji suggested it, Naohito recommends that Shin try saying how he feels to Seiji.
Story[]
Seiji is in the store as his cat, Chico, stands on the button of an air fan. Flashbacks of being struck with a bottle rouse him from his nap, and Seiji feels it is so hot on account of the weather. Shin enters the store with a young girl to speak with Seiji how the vending machine outside did not have the item come out.
Outside, Seiji asks the girl how much money was put in and she replies 100 Yen. Where the price has been raised to 110, the girl sees the situation before feeling she should go back home. While Seiji means to pay the difference for the girl, Shin does it first. After she thanks and leaves them, Seiji tells Shin he sure is nice. Handing Shin ten Yen to make up for what he gave the girl, Seiji says he can think of it as pocket money.
Inviting Shin inside, Seiji shares he is drinking some barley tea so he can have some too. Asking if Shin has gotten used to the roads around here, Seiji states he is surprised he became a cop. After Seiji says to not tell him he wanted to chase after him and become a cop, Shin replies he did not follow him or anything. Before he realized Seiji quit and left, Shin claims it would have been meaningless to follow him.
Eight years ago, up until Seiji was 31 he was a cop. Now he is at his parent's home where he inherited the Tajima shop. After Seiji hands him a drink, Shin asks if him quitting had anything to do with his injury of that time. Not impressed with the idea, Seiji asks why would Shin ever think he quit because of that when it was because his mother got sick. Where they were both on their own, Seiji took care of both his mother's issue and the shop. Saying for Shin to not fret over this and adding he quit of his own volition, Seiji encourages him to get on back to his work since it is time for that anyway.
As Shin speaks with Motsu, the girl he helped at the vending machine arrives to present the money he provided before. The girl says that after borrowing something she has to properly give it back and is happy to do so. Maki arrives and requests that Seiji deliver a message on the way to the station.
At the store, Shin gives ten Yen to Seiji (since he received that from him initially, and ten from the girl). Also delivering the message from Maki, it is that the participation to the Machikon is cancelled. Although Seiji is incensed since now the number of men and women will not match, the event at the Society of Commerce and Industry is still planned.
Wondering if Shin has got a women, after he replies no, Seiji questions if he has someone he likes. Wanting to hear about the kind of girl Shin goes for and thinking he would be popular, Seiji jokingly does not depict himself favorably. After a comment that maybe he should move onto dudes, Shin wonders if Seiji is like that. Where some friends are, Seiji says they met others at the last machikon.
Sorry for taking Seiji's time, Shin heads to leave. Next week's machokon is asked to be considered. Not really listening, Shin proceeds to kiss Seiji. Questioning if he is really moving onto men, Shin asks Seiji to choose him. Claiming to have always loved him, Shin again requests Seiji choose him over some dude he does not know.
A woman appears to enquire about the vending machine. As she greets Shin as a police man, he thinks that was close. As Shin departs, where there are others around, he speaks professionally for Seiji to be careful of thieves and burglars since they are on the rise these days. Finding the guidance comical, Seiji thinks how Shin is the thief, a lips thief.[4]
It has been a week since Shin shared his feelings, yet Seiji thinks they have not spoken or seen each other since. Considering that he is avoiding him, Seiji notes Shin has not even passed the shop anymore. Recalling the kiss, Seiji never had a clue since Shin never let anything on. Having met him when he was 27, where Shin was 17 that makes it at least 10 years. On how that is a long time to have such feelings, Seiji wonders if this is Shin's idea of a joke.
Feeling Shin did not look like he was kidding, Seiji cannot believe his first kiss in ages was with him. In considering the 10 years, Seiji's thoughts are interrupted by a woman involved with the machikon. An equal number of men and woman is needed. Since three men are missing, she needs them so that they can pair off at the event. Searching his phone contacts, Seiji sees Shin's name.
Regarding a photo of Seiji, at first Shin thought he was just this loud-mouthed grown-up. Remembering how they met, Shin was approached by Seiji who as a police officer had heard of a fight. Commenting that he looked hurt, Seiji asks Shin if they could talk for a bit. When Shin was taken into the station, Seiji hears others picked a fight with him. Asking for his address, Seiji said he would have Shin's folks pick him up.
When Shin said there was no one to pick him him, he explained his mother works night shifts and his older sister lives far away. His dad was not around since his parents split up ages ago. Although Seiji offered to take him home, Shin lived close by. As Shin walked away Seiji thought he was huge but looks small. Calling after him, Seiji said for Shin to drop by any time he needs a friend. Responding that he did not need a friend, Shin also did not need sympathy or adults lecturing him.
At a later point, outside an ice cream venue Shina was come across by Seiji. Although Shin bemoaned that it was him again, Seiji stated he was not that but is Seiji. Noticing his face, Seiji questioned if Shin got into another fight before handing him a box of plasters. Sharing he is off-duty, Seiji said he was worried about Shin as a person.
Feeling that Seiji did not try and push him around like the other adults, Shin also found him marvelling over his dyed hair. Coming to regard him as like a buddy, or brother, Shin was also preparing for college at the time. A casual friendship was just what Shin felt he needed back then, where he also found Seiji had changed his phone screensaver to a photo of himself.
Somewhere along the way, Shin thought he decided to become an adult who Seiji would be proud of. When he came back from college to show the new him, Shin found that Seiji had already left the force. Shin's feelings became clear when he could not see Seiji anymore. Even if they could meet, Shin thought he was not going to tell him, much less do that. In imagining himself kissing him, Shin felt he was the worst for thinking that of Seiji.
Presently at the Merchants Association mixer, Shin is admired by women there yet thinks he wants to go home. Having emailed Shin on his phone, Seiji addressed him as kiss thief and thanked him for coming to the mixer having volunteered him himself. Where Shin was not sure how to face him, Seiji acted normal like nothing had happened. Although Seiji had said for Shin to come since he needed to find three extra men to make up the numbers, from Shin's perspective he feels Seiji was saying to forget about him and find someone else at the mixer.
With everyone thanked for coming, Tohru and Naohito specifically since it is their day off, that Seiji is running this event is addressed. While they both assume Seiji was dumped, he says it was the other way round where someone said they had liked him for over 10 years. Asked how he reacted, Seiji answers he didn't since it was too sudden and he was not sure how. After Seiji says he did not want to give a hasty answer in case it came out wrong, Naohito suggests why not try dating them.
Unexpected to all, Shin joins them. As they speak together, Shin mentions how Seiji asked him to come. Making polite conversation, Tohru shares that he and Naohito are already dating, yet he got asked to come too. When he was going through a rough patch with women, Naohito details how Seiji gave him the advice to try men. While Naohito mentions how Seiji just says whatever is on his mind, whenever his advice is followed things always seem to work out.
Speaking how it was the same for him, Shin states he is the man he is now because of Seiji. However Shin says he now feels all he did was cause Seiji problems. Shin still hopes for a chance, so Naohito suggests he and Seiji should talk. As the event comes to an end, Seiji has not been speaking as much having been drinking. Heading home, Naohito asks if Shin can take care of Seiji.
Telling Seiji that Shin will take him home, Naohito also says for him to give the guy an answer. Giving him his own advice, Naohito says why not try men. Helped to walk home, Seiji tells Shin he is so sweet and jokes he could fall in love with him. That would make Shin happy, a response that flummoxes Seiji. When Seiji asks if Shin found someone he liked at the mixer, the response is he is right next to him. If Seiji was married and had a family, Shin states he would have given up. However he is still single, and has spoken about switching to men.
Where Seiji is irate since he is not single by choice, he adds he is sorry for not noticing. Telling Seiji to stop apologizing, Shin is sorry for making him uncomfortable. Having arrived at his home, Shin reminds Seiji to not forget to lock up. As Shin leaves, Seiji speaks how he is okay with dating him. As for why, it is because Shin brought it up and he said to not pick some random guy. Since Shin said he had been in love for 10 years, Seiji thought he could give it a try if it with him.
While Shin thinks Seiji is just saying whatever, he adds to quit teasing him. Not teasing him, Seiji also questions when has he ever just said whatever. Wanting to love someone who loves him back, Seiji asks if Shin does love him. When Shin confirms he does, Seiji affirms they are good then. When Seiji wants him to show him what 10 years' worth of love is like, Shin replies he will give him 10 years worth of everything as he embraces him.
In the 10-plus years since they parted ways, Seiji returns Shin's hug while thinking he has grown a bit.[5]
