Characters[]
Junior/Chu Yi[]
After seeing a body taken away, Junior runs and calls for Hank. Being bullied by people from his class outside of school, Junior makes no attempt to defend himself. Although defended by his granny, Junior is still chastised by her for his behaviour. Similarly, Junior acts indifferently to the verbal abuse from his mother, and having objects thrown at him. Having a stammer, Junior shares his name to Hank. Voicing his concerns by speaking into a tree hole, Junior would like to move elsewhere. While meaning to go by himself, Junior is fine with Hank coming with him to get a notepad. He is pleased to point out there are indeed one dollar noodles available for them. Thanking Hank but stating he does not need to come to his school anymore, Junior mentions the time he has until he graduates, and will he go everyday. Where his pen has been thrown into the river, Junior makes more than one attempt to try and find it. While initially denying he got it for Hank, he is then pleased to announce in fact it was. Witnessing a magic trick, Junior takes ahold of Hank's hand as he sees the coin has disappeared. Learning that Hank punched Jerry where he was bullied by the latter, Junior is deeply angered that Hank lost his job over that. Outright avoiding Ben, he has been troubled by him years ago. Happy to spend time at Hank's, he does not mind being shown on his livestream. Disconcerted that Hank does not have many fans, and has not been receiving gifts, Junior offers himself for the stream where that has been well received for Hank's benefit. Thinking highly of Joshua, he considers him good fun. Accepting his offer to learn how to fight, Junior takes up boxing and becomes proficient at that. While he struggles academically, and seems to accept his family's words that his efforts will not amount to anything, Junior does resolve to continue studying. Learning that his father has disappeared, Junior is greatly concerned that he might have something to do with a murder where Joshua was seemingly involved. While he feels unable to face Hank, he does take to his characteristic hiding attempts. Concealed behind a tree, Junior checks on Hank's wellbeing by seeing if the lights are on. Seeing him, Junior tends to him in his deteriorated state.

Now 17 and living by himself, Junior shows his apartment over a video call to a live audience and states he is hibernating. When one gets bored, Junior affirms a part-time job can be done, or English can be learned from a book. A live stream on the Internet can also be undertook and Hank interacts with others over one such live stream. Observing Junior being bullied, while thinking how he does not even bother, and with there no sign of rebellion, Hank wonders should he just let it be. Seeing one smash a bottle over Junior, he feels they have gone too far today. Placing a mask on, Hank exits out the window. Whistling to draw their attention, Hank states from now on he will protect Junior. Having set up his phone to record the scenario, Hank pushes one of the bullies into another. Charged at, Hank punches his would be assailant across the face. Where Hank had been taught how to fight by his dad, Joshua, he feels his lessons are more than enough to handle these kids. Turning to Junior to share he lives on the first floor, Hank says to come and find him every time he gets into trouble. Noting his smile, Hank considers how Junior does not seem affected at all and what an amazing little guy. What Hank soon understood that one of the reasons Junior's classmates looked down on him was because he had a weird granny. Jogging, Hank finds Junior and wondering if he is alright in the head, Hank suggests they exchange phone numbers. Having taken to defending Junior from bullies, Hank quits a job he acquires at a cafe, and still means to return a dollar to him feeling he may need it more. Messaging Junior, he wonders what could that kid possibly have to do on the weekend. In sharing him on his livestream, when Junior is called handsome by others, Hank agrees and thinks how he is photogenic. Jogging with him, after raising if Junior wants to come round for a barbecue, where he readily and happily agrees, it is what Hank likes about him. Hearing Junior just wants to hang out with him, Hank says he will have to tell his dad that the magic trick he displayed does not get girls, just Junior. Walking Junior home, Hank considers where before he only had a memory of the cities he left, where no traces were left, now he would have the memory of a person. Having gained a job at a restaurant, Hank treats Junior to steak where they will share the pizza. Paying attention to his dad, Hank is concerned at his unusual behaviour of staying up late. Where he knew nothing about his grandparents, Hank wants to hear about his mother when the topic is raised. Hearing light footsteps outside, Hank considers they are not dads, or Junior's. It couldn't be the police, they wouldn't come alone. Retrieving a knife, Hank wonders who would knock.

In class, seeing that Junior has been pricked by a thumbtack taped to the back of his chair, he and a bullying accomplice mock his lack of reaction. Flanking Junior on either side, Jerry has his arm around him while speaking how his master did not come. Startled upon finding Hank waiting outside school, Jerry is alarmed that he has streamed their actions, and are further concerned about the teacher finding out. Coming across Junior outside of school, they sprint away when noticing Hank there. Caught, Jerry says for Hank to go ahead and hit him. Unable to stand that Junior was planning to give that pen to someway, Jerry announces he just threw it in the river. Questioning what is he going to do about it, Jerry adds if Hank wants to stick up for Junior then he can go ahead and hit him. Hit by him, Jerry falls to the ground. Complaining to his dad, Jerry tells him that the new employee at the cafe, Hank, hit him, without detailing why. Still determined to be a pest, Jerry again raises how Junior's master is not here to walk him to school, before questioning does he think it is all over after hitting him once. Claiming it is only because of his dad that he has not given Hank a beat down, Jerry remarks he was just a clerk at his dad's shop. Asking who the hell he thought he was, Jerry thinks Hank is probably at some restaurant washing dishes now. With Junior not saying anything, neither looking at him, Jerry demands to know whether he is looking for a fight. Leaning on Junior and speaking that his house is closest to the murder scene, having noted that he skipped afternoon class, Jerry asks if he saw anything.

Focusing on Junior, she denigrates him for having the energy to go crazy all night, but now that he's home he is just staring into space. Calling him during his lunch to tell him to pick up his granny's clothes, hearing that Junior has to study, she demands to know what good is that going to do with his lousy grades. Kneeing Junior, at being struck in the side by Hank he appears to vomit while remaining on the ground. Unable to do much against Hank, despite going on the offence, Ben acknowledges he is outmatched. Asking their names, Ben recognizes the historical names Hank and Joshua use and demands to know what kind of weird role play this is. Showing up on a motorbike, Ben orders Junior to get out the way or does he want to die. Then calling him an idiot, Ben states he is in a hurry today so will deal with him later. At a scooter repair shop, Ben instructs his accomplices to stop asking about why the cops interrogated him. Seeing Junior and telling him he has ten seconds to get out his face, Ben responds for him to go ask the cops for what happened to Ding when asked about that. Questioning why he would tell him anything, Ben declares Junior's dad is a murderer.

Hearing about Ding, she says for Junior to say whatever comes to mind. Wang claims they are just collecting information, and are not making any final judgements based on his words alone.
Eaton Cui[]

Explaining the alias, Eaton says Siwon (the name of a a Korean band member) is the first name. Sorry he does not any news of his dad, the envelope was express delivered to him, where Eaton followed the address and the date he should come. Having come to give Hank money, Eaton adds he is also to take him away. Saying how Joshua would not ask for his help if it was not important, Eaton has not been in contact for five years before he was called out of the blue two months ago. Story[]
Emergency services are active at the scene of a crime. Orders are not to worry about the crowds and go, further directions are to protect the crime scene as forensics are hurried. A body is carried away on a stretcher, and as people gathered round wonder how he died, it is said to be a murder. Junior turns and calls for Hank.
Over a video call, Hank Yan shows a new room that does not exceed eight square meters. With his dad, they have been living a life without a permanent address. Doing a live stream, Hank observes Junior outside having his backpack belongings spilled onto the ground by bullies including Jerry Li. Near the 82nd high school near his new house, Hank can see Junior being bullied by kids from the same school. Where they mean to see how Junior will react to a broken bottle, Hank intervenes to declare he will defend him. After fending off the bullies, Hank says for Junior to come to him if it happens again.[1] Where Junior's granny had arrived and began swearing at the bullies, they decided to go before she started ripping her clothes off or something.
Speaking with him, Hank hears that Junior had a stutter. While Junior was acquiring what granny wanted from a store, he remembers negative talk involving a woman named Penny. By night time, placing his head into a tree-hollow, Junior shares his frustrations before being found by Hank who was jogging. They exchange phone numbers.[2] When Hank asks are there usually a lot of people on this route, Junior answers no. Hank finds out why when he trips in a crack on the path.
Entering the apartment he is staying in, Hank finds his dad, Joshua Yan. In preparing dinner, Joshua speaks how his little prince's boiled water tastes great and he is on his way to becoming a famous chef after all, which Hank feels it sounds like he is criticizing him. While Hank has prepared dinner, Joshua has fallen asleep. After Hank snaps his fingers, Joshua places him in an arm lock, who manages to keep the plate balanced just fine. A jolly moment, they enjoy eating together. Presenting a fake ID in case work is needed, Hank sees his is Jidao Yan where Joshua has opted for Shu Yan.[3] While heading to bed, Hank is advised to not take the sleep medication he has on him too often as it is a possible suicide method to save for later.[4]
Seeing Hank's profile on his phone, Junior then reacts to a thumbtack taped to the back of his chair in class. Jerry and another student behind him jeer how he does not even have a reaction before commenting what a numbskull. Still hassling Junior outside, the bullies then see Hank is there, armed with his phone. Thanking him, Junior speaks how he needs to get a notebook, while Hank hears it as he needs to get notes and a book. When Hank mentions he will go with him, and to just buy him food later, Junior answers he does not have any money. In the book store, Hank is bemused that Junior means to buy the first one he touched without thinking about it at all. In Hank coming to his school, Junior raises how there is a year and a half until he graduates and it's a question of whether he would come every day.
Arriving to where he is staying, Hank sees that Joshua has made goldfish shaped dumplings. In discussing someone who can calmly accept their life without being bothered by anything, Hank thinks what are his inner thoughts. The next morning, Hank is jogging before he finds Junior wading in the river flowing below.[5] Learning he is looking for his pen, Hank questions Junior why he feels he is being bullied. When the bullies themselves appear again, Hank sets about chasing them down after they run. Challenged to beat them, Hank does so. Saying for them to keep their mouths shut, Hank further orders them to take another route.
Having found a job, Hank sees the boss is the father of Jerry, the bully he punched. Rather than explain the situation, Hank is not particularly invested in the job to begin with so leaves. Messaging Junior, meaning to return the dollar he spent on noodles, Hank states for them to meet at the tree hole at noon. Locating him in the river again, Hank notices the pen from his vantage point. Raising how Junior got it for a girl, Hank advises him wash it, and use a different bag and it should be good. When Hank addresses whether the pen was really for him, at first Junior answers no, before he presents him the pen.[6]
Sharing the gift of a pen to his followers, those watching question if they can see Junior's face. When Junior asks if a lot of people watch his stream, Hank answers not many. Then raising if people do not watch his stream, and hearing no, Junior asks why. Baffled, Hank questions does Junior not think it is inappropriate to talk about why he has so few fans, while they are live streaming in front of them. After Junior is shown, he remembers the need to get oil. Walking home from the market, Junior appears embarrassed to see a crowd around his granny who is making a scene at their behest.
When Hank tells Joshua he is heading to the supermarket, he sees Junior carrying the large bottle of cooking oil. Bringing him to the supermarket with him, Hank invites Junior to eat at his.[7] After Junior is introduced to Joshua, Hank takes him into the kitchen and prepares the livestream. Where viewers also notice Junior is there, Hank directs him to bring the baking sheet which he does. After Hank places the pizza in the oven, Junior wonders is that it. When his dad comments on his popularity, Hank states someone just tipped him cash, to which Joshua questions if this was by accident. Asking if Hank wants his face, Junior feels bad that he is not getting gifts. Hank gathers Junior means showing his face for the stream.
As they eat pizza, Joshua mentions a shirtless old lady arguing with people earlier this afternoon, before Junior states that is his granny.[8] Joshua says Junior should just be himself. As Junior washes the dishes, Joshua receives a message and heads out. Where Hank does not know where he goes or who he meets, he observes as they went from city to city, his dad would come back at any time with injuries.
After Hank informs him that Jidao isn't his dad's real name, Junior mentions his own father who does not speak much. Seeing Hank's shoes outside by the trash can, they were the pair worn when he fished for the pen. Stating they are dirty and old, Hank has worn them for a year now, yet Junior sees they are brand named. As Hank considers Junior's worn clothing, he thinks his shoes probably would not fit him. While thinking how the streaming could result in the means to get new attire for Junior, after Hank asks if he wants the shoes, he replies no need. When Hank questions him about his parents, Junior states his mother worked for a water vendor, and his dad is a driver. While Hank thinks Junior's dad should make a pretty good living as drivers can earn a couple of thousand a month, Junior is unsure of their financial situation.
Getting a call, Junior speaks he is at a friend's house and will come home now. When Junior says his mom is angry, Hank states to let him come and help explain to them. Running back, Junior is kicked over by Ben Liang who is familiar with him. Regarded as a thug, Junior sees Ben is back after years. Arriving home, Junior is physically and verbally abused by his mom.[9] By 3:20pm, Junior is messaged by Hank on whether he got a scolding. After they arrange to go jogging together, Junior asks Hank about the shoes and whether he can still get them back. Acquiring them, they proceed to go jogging at night.
When Junior questions why Hank was not at school, it is recalled how he quit during middle school. While Joshua was surprised at Hank's arm injury at the time, they moved out the city after around ten days. Having never really been to school, Hank mentions he did not stay anywhere long enough.[10] Where he is trying to show Junior a coin based magic trick, which he is impressed by, Hank will tell him how it works as long as he promises not to share the secret. Hank explains he can make it disappear because it is a magic coin. Delighted at the idea, Junior laughs, and Hank tells him to keep it as his pop said coins can always protect him. Raising how Hank will not be staying here long, Junior then asks where he is from. Replying from many places, Hank states further he is his own home town.[11]
An envelope titled "To: the prince" is shown appearing in a flashback involving Hank and Joshua. While Hank was told to open such letters should his father not return, he never did over the years. As Junior walks, he is hassled by Jerry, who feels he is capable of giving Hank a beat down. With Junior unaware that Hank hit Jerry, he focuses on how Hank was working at a cafe and got fired. After Jerry leaves, Junior considers how in the past he was always able to keep his cool, despite all the humiliation and hurtful things that he experienced, but now. The first time Junior saw Hank he was shocked, the way he punched Jerry and the rest of them while he was streaming, before consideration is given to how free he is. In awe, Junior just liked being close to Hank, where underneath he was a calm and easygoing guy. Considering it has been so long since he talked so easily with someone, Junior wishes he had not gotten close to Hank so he would not have to be sorry about leaving him one day.
Arriving at Hank's house, who jokingly requests a toll, Junior raises how he hit Jerry. Where Junior is downtrodden that Hank lost his job, he replies he loses several a year. Returning home, Junior finds his lucky coin is gone. Asking if his mom has seen it, she answers she spent it. Running to the store, Junior sees it in the cash register and manages to get it back in exchange for a note.[12] Messaging Junior and hearing he took a different route, Hank thinks no wonder he did not see him pass by today as he glances out the window. After agreeing to meet up for jogging later, Hank sets about streaming himself making baked rice.
As Hank considers anxiety, he turns the stream off before acquiring a knife in response to a sound at the door. Not even knowing why he has this reaction, Hank considers his father's unintentional training, before seeing that it is him who enters. When Joshua comments how he seems grown up, Hank replies he always had to be a grownup, no thanks to him. Embracing him, Joshua says he has always been sorry for that. While saying there is no need to hug since he is not injured, Hank tells his dad he is scared. With Joshua disappearing, Hank even as a kid considered the possibilities to be special ops, to an undercover agent, and assassin. Thinking what Junior said about freedom, Hank considers what he envies is just in his imagination. With no place to come from, nowhere to go home to, Hank wonders is this kind of freedom really something to envy.
Having eaten, Hank finds that pops took the letter. No matter where he hides it, Hank contemplates how his dad always manages to find it, and then his life goes back to the way it was. Today, Hank felt different and he did not want anyone, even pops, to sense his unease. After eating, Joshua mentions how Hank's grandma passed away last year, and his grandpa died last month where they were not even that old. Only knowing that his dad was an orphan, Hank thinks he didn't have paternal grandparents. Where he does not know them, Hank does not know if he should feel sad. When his father begins crying because he misses Hank's mom, it is the first time he saw him cry. While Joshua means to stay for a while, Junior arrives to go jogging with Hank.[13]
Jogging, Hank mentions how he has grown about two inches this year. Speaking whether he has been robbed before, and how Junior cuts his own hair, Hank is getting his cut tomorrow so why does he not come with him. Since Hank starts work tomorrow, and gets off late on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, Hank suggests Junior come with him to get the groceries. As they walk back, Hank asks if Junior wants to join him for a barbecue. Eating together, Joshua asks if Junior's mom cooks well. After he states that she just throws everything together, Joshua laughs at the response before noticing the protection charm coin. Detailing how Hank gave him one, Junior shares he was scared to death after believing his mom spent it. When Hank says it would be okay and to just get another one, Junior stubbornly replies no way, since this one is different. To help him protect it, Hank uses a leather strap to hold the coin and thinks he has never seen someone who could care so much about a coin.
Departing, Joshua says Hank should walk Junior home. While Junior feels he is fine since he is a guy, Hank mentions he needs a little walk. The weather is getting warmer and around this time is when the nightlife picks up. Pointing out his house, Junior speaks if Hank leaves one day he will miss him. While thinking he used to have no connection to any place, and when leaving no trace was left behind, Hank feels he actually left one here. Contemplating how he will not remember just a city, Hank thinks he will have a picture in his memory.[14]
Thinking how he finally got Jerry to stop, now Junior sees that Ben has shown up. Unable to avoid both of them when heading home from school, Junior messages Hank to ask where the restaurant he works at is. When Junior reaches the HYDE restaurant, Hank is at the door to invite him in. Treating him, Hank says he is about to get off work so Junior can sit here and wait for him. Bringing him pizza, with steak coming, Junior is not sure what sauce to have, before deciding on the black pepper as that is what Hank is having.
Contemplating how Hank is so cool, Junior considers even as a waiter he attracts everyone's attention. Noticing him, Hank asks if Junior is trying to take a photograph of the steak or him. Recommending he change his phone, Hank says his dad just upgraded where it is only a year old. Replying his aunt gave him one, Junior says she did not want his mom to know as she hates her. Affirming that the steak is Junior's and they can share the pizza, Hank then mentions he is having a talk with his dad tonight. Concerned, Hank thinks how he has noticed while his dad usually always sleeps easily, last night he didn't sleep until very late and was holed up in his bedroom. Where Joshua said they would talk about Hank's mom, he shares his thoughts with Junior. Unsure what he means, when Hank laughs that he is illiterate, Junior answers he is in middle school where Hank only graduated elementary school.
Exiting the supermarket, Hank walks past Ben and his accomplices. Glancing at them, Hank is asked what he is looking at, and whether he wants to fight. Standing by the window keeping an eye out, Hank is asked by Joshua what he is doing. Aware of Ben and knowing he likes to give Junior trouble, Hank registers he is not someone who can be easily hid from. After Joshua suggests what he is in favor of, Hank heads out to wait for Ben.[15] Where Ben is outside his school, Hank awaits Junior who signals his presence by waving from behind a tree. While Hank did not get a chance to defend him, Junior speaks about taking a detour. Mentioning how Junior is hiding from him every day, Hank questions when does it end. While Junior mentions when he begins work, Hank replies they do not hire kids. Encouraging him to continue his studies, Hank thinks Junior does not seem to care what he studies as long as he can leave here.
While presenting a coin like object, Junior feels he needs to polish it some more before giving it to Hank. Eating with his dad, who merrily states they are only alive so long, Hank questions isn't their goal to live to be over a hundred. Seeing that Hank is studying English, Joshua feels it would have been easier if he were a girl, where he could be married instead of being with him. With the possibility of having other children raised, Joshua states his prince really keeps his composure, it took him this long to ask. Hank was not even two years old when his mother passed away. When Joshua was young he found it hard, not even knowing where his parents came from. Only knowing he was an orphan, his only thought was how to survive. Meeting Hank's mother, she would insist they marry. Mentioning how Hank's granny and gramps were really good to him, Joshua worked at the market under them. Where Hank's mother had a huge argument with her parents over marrying him, she said she would never be in contact with them again, and she was right. Wishing he had not have married her, Joshua feels she would not have died.[16]
When Hank was a baby, his mother intervened in a murder and thievery situation. Where she was murdered and the culprit not caught, Joshua remembers what he looked like. Recalling how he brought Hank to live with him instead of his grandparents after two years, Joshua feels selfish. When Hank was living with his grandparents and called for his mom, they were hostile to him and Joshua over the death of their daughter. When Hank wakes from a dream he considers it is not like anyone would remember an unsolved murder case ten years later, except maybe close relatives. Speaking to Joshua in the morning, they discuss the music event Junior mentioned a couple of days ago. Where Joshua would like to come as well, they then discuss making rice au gratin for breakfast.
Wondering if Joshua was searching or running away, Hank has prepared the cooking for his stream. Elsewhere, Junior has been punched by Ben and his cronies. Where they have his phone, Ben asks who this Hank is. Breaking his phone and striking Junior, they then talk about pulling his pants off. Saying how his granny likes to be shirtless, they think her grandson probably likes to be pantless.[17] Rising so as to headbutt one, Junior is then then kicked by them while they ask if he has a death wish, Hank has arrived to knee Ben in the side. While Ben vomits, Hank and Joshua who is also there, set about punching and kicking the bunch of lowlives they have found. As Junior wonders if they dropped out the sky, Hank helps him to his feet while reminding him of the concert they were going to go to.
When a man heads to Hank with a machete, Joshua kicks the assailant away by the head. With Ben moving to punch Hank, seizing him from behind, Junior tackles him to the ground. As Hank pins Ben down, it is clear the four member group are done. Asking their names, Jidao Yan and Shu Yan happily share them, and how it is nice to meet them. Checking if Hank is alright, Junior then bows in gratitude to Joshua too. While treating Junior's injury at their place, Joshua praises his capabilities and says for him to come over to train. Where Junior's school uniform has been ripped, Hank thinks to get one of his old ones to give him, yet they are to change into summer uniforms soon.
Waiting outside for a taxi arrive so they can get to the show, Junior begins sniffing Hank's clothes that he is wearing.[18] Within the taxi, Junior sees the charm he made around Hank's leg. While Junior's phone is broken, it is still functional. At the concert, Hank feels how only an hour ago, Junior was beaten, his phone was broken, and he almost lost everything, but now he seems completely fine. Junior is amazed that both Hank and his dad know the lyrics to the song. As Hank contemplates on matters, Junior prods him in the cheek. Relocating to an open air teahouse on the second floor of a building, on the way, Junior takes Hank's hand and comments it is cold. They hold hands together as they cross the road.
Discussing when Junior's stutter began, they gather it was caused by fear. Guiding him to speak slower, Hank records Junior saying three words without stuttering present. Thinking he does not know why he started recording him, Hank considers maybe he just wanted to keep a memento.[19] Taking public transportation, while it is disliked, it is hard to get around a concert otherwise. While Junior tells him it is okay, he is pressed into Hank who questions whether he is popping a boner. When Junior speaks how that is inappropriate, Hank questions then why is he so flustered. After checking that the bottle cap is still around Hank's leg, Junior is called to by his dad who happened to be passing by in his car. Offering them a ride, when Joshua says no need, Junior's dad reacts to his face. While Joshua then says for Junior to go home with his father, Hank wonders why Junior's dad looked shocked when he saw pops.
Raising whether Junior's dad has seen him before, Joshua is not sure. Driving back, Junior's dad asks about his new friends. Wondering when he met them, Junior replies last month. After being questioned whether he is aware of their situation, Junior thinks how dad is asking more questions tonight than usual. Asking what is wrong, Junior is told it would be better for him to stay away from them. When Junior's dad arrives home, it transpires he was supposed to be off and was only working as Ding could not make it, and president Luo had called him. As Junior's mother chastises him, she then criticizes Junior for staring into space now that he has arrived home.
As Junior considers Ding, elsewhere Hank and Joshua banter over who is to use the bathroom first. Waiting for Joshua to finish, Hank considers how he his dad has always been a wanderer, good at judging people, and good at lying. Where even he saw Junior's father's expression, Hank feels this is a case where Joshua did not tell the truth. With his mother's murder visualized, Hank considers pops might not have met Junior's dad, but he must have been at a place where Junior's dad saw him. Junior's dad is envisioned as the murderer.[20] Waking from his dream, Hank wonders who Junior's father could be. Finding Joshua meditating in the window, they then see that Junior has arrived. After Junior mentions Joshua was like a painting, where there was even a frame, much to Hank's laughter, he comes in for breakfast. While Hank makes sandwiches, Junior sets about taking his ankle charm since a bigger hole needs to be drilled in it. Finding it hard when Junior cut the strong, Hank wants to keep it. After Junior has departed to get food for later, Hank and Joshua discuss his urge to seemingly need to be of use. Then, Joshua states he will be going out this afternoon. Mentioning it is just a stroll, Joshua will get groceries on the way back. It was the first time Joshua told Hank beforehand when he was going out, and coming back. It did not reassure Hank though, who still felt some anxiety. Asking Joshua when they are leaving this time, Hank hears he can decide.
With three other employees, as they discuss the number of customers, Hank checks his phone. Seeing a photo of Junior boxing, Hank hears Joshua took him for the session. When Hank encourages Junior to study up where he can show him tonight, Junior replies he might hurt him. In response to Hank saying he brags better than he speaks, but he will concede if he gets a hit, Junior sends a muscle emoji. While training, Junior finds Hank has joined him at the gym.[21] With self-defence the goal for now, Joshua says he will teach Junior further tomorrow. While Hank shares a photo of Junior practicing with his audience, he continues his training. As Hank reflects on a lazy afternoon, with his dad still here, and an interesting friend, he feels a strange, soft, fuzzy feeling of contentment. While Hank knows how short-lived this feeling is, he cannot help but immerse himself in it.
Where Joshua said he would not leave for a while, Hank found that he meant it. From the outside, they look like the most normal father and son in any old district of any old city. Realizing that it is Joshua's phone ringing, where it almost never does so, Hank can tell he has answered it. Wondering what they are talking about, Hank thinks how they both know this quiet is just an illusion, and it is like Joshua is just following a procedure. Hearing Joshua is going out for a stroll, Hank questions for how long. Wanting to know who called, and what did they want, Hank is emotional when asking what his dad is planning to do. With Joshua departing, Hank asks where the envelope is as he wants to see it.
As Junior exits the classroom, Jerry shouts for him to stop right there. Ignoring him, Junior has also been using the excuse of studying to not go home during lunch since he wants to go to Hank's for his cooking livestream. Called by his mother to pick up his granny's clothes, it is mentioned his father is missing so he cannot be asked. Saying he will go, after exiting the market Junior wonders why Hank has not answered his phone. Appearing on a motorbike, when Ben is trying to be menacing, Junior feels he cannot keep being a wuss. With Ben claiming to be busy, Junior wonders if he is scared because of what Hank and Joshua did last time. After Hank asks for the envelope, Joshua answers he does not need it right now. Questioning when does he need it, Hank raises if it is when Joshua is gone forever. Saying for them to leave, Hank reminds Joshua that he said he gets to pick this time, so wants to leave now.[22] When Hank feels Joshua lied to him, he questions what he should say so that he does not leave. After Hank states that Joshua cares more for a dead person than him, he details how the pain of his wife's loss consumes him where he cannot think of anything else. Hank sees pain in his father's eyes that he has never seen before, and speaks that he has not let down his mother, only him.
Arriving home with the clothes, granny is impressed while Junior's mom still cannot get through to his dad. Knocking on their apartment door, Junior finds Hank and Joshua are not in. With the window open, Junior sees Hank sat on the floor inside. Entering and checking to see what is wrong, Junior is placed on the ground by Hank who asks who is there. Speaking it is him, Junior asks if Hank is sick. After ordering Junior to bring him water, Hank seems back to himself and says how he wanted to make him pizza. Speaking how he said some pretty awful things just now, Hank adds they were pretty vile things.[23] Having said them to his dad, Hank is not sure where he went. With the pizza arriving, Junior feeds a slice to Hank. While thinking how he seemed better, Junior couldn't leave him like he was so they sat like that on his floor for the entire afternoon. When Junior mentions dinner, Hank says he can go home now. Feeling Junior does not want to go home, Hank says he will cook, then claims he is fine when Junior is worried.
When Junior is directed to go get groceries while Hank showers, while walking there are people discussing whether someone really died. Picking up that it is in the direction of his tree hole, on the way Junior sees blood and thinks to forget it, he does not want to see this after all. Returning, Junior tells Hank he did not really check but he thinks someone died. Finding Hank's reaction to be unexpected where he seems to be concerned, Junior is then told to go over and see what happened. Alone, Hank trembles as he searches the apartment for the envelope. Someone is being carried on a stretcher, and seeing it, Junior runs back to Hank.
Detailing he could not get through because there were police cars and ambulances, Junior is then asked if he saw who died.[24] Where the body was covered, Junior only saw a gold watch, on the arm that was visible. When Junior says he can go back and check, Hank states not to bother. Unable to describe how he felt in that moment, it is as if his heart was hanging in empty space. While Junior wonders if he is going to take it out on him, Hank pulls him into an embrace. Having always felt like taking something to fill the anxiety in his heart, Hank then asks if Junior has done his homework. Having left his bag, Junior helps in the kitchen, and considering his state thinks to keep the knife with him and out of Hank's hands.
Wondering about people who could have gold watches, where Junior does not seem to know who it was, Hank guesses it may have just been a random accident, yet takes into account his dad's timing. Where Junior is hammering the bowl to get ice cubes out, the shrimp they are preparing is covered in it. Finding Junior is quick, Hank also thinks of him as considerate for putting his iced tea in the fridge to keep it cold. The news reports that there is heavy traffic congestion after the collapse of the Chaoyang overpass. While Hank urgently checks his phone, it is Junior's who has been messaged. Where it says to not come back and he can die on the street, Junior is also told he can ditch class too. Telling Junior to go home, Hank says he should be fine after sleeping. Saying that Junior is cute, Hank adds others just haven't seen it yet.[25]
Mentioning how he is not alone, Junior states he will stay here a while with Hank. After kissing him, Hank says he would like to be alone tonight. As Hank lies in the dark, around 6 in the afternoon today, a serious fight is reported to have broken out in the Eastern district of the city. The Linhe district police report how one person died from blood loss. The victim is suspected to have been attacked in the alley, before dying on the spot from blood loss after running out to the street.
With his mother and granny, who know he has been ditching class, Junior has had dinner spilt over him. While he is said to come home when he likes and disappear without a trace, Junior thinks it is actually the other way around. He does not come home when he is happy, there is nothing happy about coming back for dinner. Where his legs have been burnt, Junior thinks he will go and buy some ointment. Calling the police is mentioned when finding Junior's father is raised, yet his mother and granny bicker at the perceived stupidity of doing such a thing.
Thinking how it is rare for his dad to not pick up calls, Junior also considers how Hank has been acting strange having made his way over. Seeing him, and then the burns on his legs, Hank tells Junior to come in.[26] While Junior is unsure of whether to say he forgot it or that the burn ointment was too expensive to buy, Hank has some which he applies to him. As Junior wonders whether Hank has been crying, he answers the burns were because he spilled some soup while carrying a pot of it. Asking if Junior's granny did it, Hank questions will she do something else when he gets back. Answering they do not care about him after dinner time, Hank states they will share the bed since the sofa is too small.
Telling Junior to sleep for school tomorrow, Hank says he will as well, yet thinks he will just stare into space. Feeling he will not be as scared with Junior here, Hank sees on his phone a discussion about the murder. Where someone has mentioned a bro who knows, Ben is imagined as a source of information. Finding he is not asleep, Junior mentions his dad never came home today. Feeling a sudden chill in the air, Hank thinks all these events can't be coincidences. What Hank is worried about has already probably happened, yet he cannot understand how Junior's dad could be connected to all this. Feeling he should have not said anything as Hank feels bad to begin with, Junior speaks that he can always speak to him.[27]
Taking Hank's hand and finding it thin, Junior then feels what he speculates is a scar. Aware of this, and what Junior must be thinking, Hank claims it is a scar from when he was scratched by a nail. When Hank sprays something, Junior guesses sleeping gas. Asking if Junior thinks he would do that, it is lavender mist, to help him sleep. Considering his dad, the murder victim, and Junior's dad, then Ben, it is another sleepless night where Hank has been trying to connect them but cannot find the thread. When his mom is angered that Junior's dad has gone missing and now he has, Hank says he will walk him back and explain. Telling Junior to not come during his lunch break, Hank states for him to go directly home and to let him know if he hears something about his dad.
In class, Junior denies he saw anything concerning the murder when interrogated by Jerry. The teacher enters and calls for Junior. Hearing that his aunt has requested he be given the rest of the day off since something happened, outside, Junior is picked up by Penny. His father still has not been found, but the police saw the car Junior's dad drove in the video footage. It was the one his dad drove yesterday. The victim was one of Junior's father's coworkers, another driver. The police will not say anything while they are investigating, but Penny says he does not need to panic before they know what happened with his father. Where he never imagined his timid dad would get caught up in a murder case, Junior questions if this is a joke.[28]
Others discuss how maybe Junior's dad did it as he walks with Penny. In a room with the police, Junior is asked questions by officer Wang on his father's behaviour. Asked about his co-workers, Mr. Ding's name is brought up and how he hit Junior's dad. Showing a picture, Junior recognizes the car his dad drives but not the back of the person in it. After the police leave, Junior's mother, and grandparents discuss Ding and Junior's father running when he gets killed. Gathering that it was Mr. Ding who died, Junior's mother asks Penny to see if she can gather information. As the environment devolves to arguing, Junior finds it unbearable that his aunt came from far away and his mom is saying these kind of things. With everyone talking at once and Junior thinking, the overall picture is Junior's dad drove Ding to the alley and they went into it together. After Ding was stabbed, Junior's dad drove away in the car, but left it outside the city and is now missing. With three people involved, one is dead, Junior's dad is missing and Junior thinks why the third one looked familiar.
Penny means to make some calls to see if she can learn anything. Frustrated, Junior wonders how Hank is doing, and in thinking of him he knows who that man is. Police have arrived at Hank's apartment and ask what his relationship to Joshua is.[29] Where Junior is he thinks the man in the photo looks like Joshua. Before the police, Hank states the person in the photo does look like his father. Seeing another photo, Hank knows it is Junior's father, but answers the police he does not know who he is. To himself Hank rationalizes technically he does not 'know' him, having only seen him once. Answering he thinks his father left home Wednesday morning, Hank replies further he has not come back since or contacted him. Having not said who he was meeting, Hank answers no again when questioned if his dad knows anyone else here. When any calls are mentioned, Hank answers yes, that Joshua left after one. Questioned if he attends school, Hank answers no, he dropped out because of depression and he has a doctor's note. Not knowing why they moved here and that it is always like that, after the police thank him and depart, Hank trembles as he slips to the floor.
Thanking Penny for the money she gives him for food, Junior steps out to find others speaking how his family are the scariest kinds of people and they will not just stop at one. While people see Junior as a murderer's kid, he thinks who would have known Ding and even Joshua would be involved with his dad's disappearance. Where everyone is gossiping about his father being the killer, Junior is a little scared to face Hank. Watching from his window, Hank notes it has been a few days and there has been no news from his dad, neither has he found the letter. Having seen that Junior has been standing behind the tree a couple of hours each day makes Hank more sure that Junior's dad definitely has something to do with the incident. Where he has been watching for the lights to turn on and off everyday, Junior considers he must seem like some type of perv. Scared to face him out of concern that his dad hurt Joshua, Junior heads in to get snacks when worry for Hank prevails.
Tiptoeing to Hank's apartment, Junior means to leave a bag of groceries outside, knock, then run before he is seen. Finding the door is opening before he can knock, Junior is seized by Hank before he can flee. Asking where he is going, Hank affirms Junior will never be a good thief with a slow reaction speed like that. Seeing that Hank has lost weight and gotten really pale, Junior tearfully says he is sorry.[30] Presenting the instant beef stew Junior has tried before, he says to let him read the instructions to him. Munching on monster seaweed, Hank says Junior should not worry about him and should deal with his dad first. While there has been no news, Hank advises Junior to go home and get some sleep. His dad is missing but he still has got to live his life.
Handing Junior a boxing membership card, Hank explains they do not usually stay in one place for very long yet his dad applied for an annual membership which he probably did for him. When asked if he is leaving soon, Hank replies Junior is not even that old but is already having such heavy thoughts. After Junior leaves, Hank thinks he lied as he does not plan to rest for a while. When Hank closes his eyes he can see blood splattered everywhere. The surveillance video isn't complete, three people went into the alley, but only Junior's dad came out the same way. Wondering where his dad went, Hank thinks with that much blood at the scene, it had to be fatal.
Aware the footsteps outside belong to someone he does not know, Hank acquires a knife. Asking who it is after they knock, with the voice saying they are his dad's friend, Hank feels he must be testing him. Thinking how there is a small window in the kitchen he could escape from, the voice passes a letter under the door to Hank. Opening the letter it states "Dearest prince: you can trust the person outside."[31] Noting the eight words, which includes the greeting, Hank considers further how the ink looks fresh. The voice professes he did not touch what is inside, and does not know what it is about. Supposedly, Joshua said once Hank read it he would understand. Finding it is definitely his dad's handwriting, Hank realizes what was in the envelope was not fixed at all, where something new was probably written every time depending on the situation. Feeling stupid for taking the letters seriously before, Hank opens the door where Eaton Cui introduces himself under the alias Siwon Choi. Inside, Eaton explains he has no news of his dad, and arrived to the address on the date specified. Here to take Hank away, Eaton speaks how Joshua wanted him to have a normal life.
Where Junior is being driven by Penny, she wanted to tell him he was going to his grandparents' house for a few days but feels he is not in the mood to hear about that kind of thing. After Penny states she would like Junior to have a life like a regular kid, he considers his family. Where he was shouted at by his mother, when Junior was a kid he was left at the market when his dad got into some kind of fight and ran. Arriving at his grandparents' house, they don't speak about Junior's missing dad, yet Junior feels anger towards his dad for his behaviour given how nice they are.
Entering the alleyway where Joshua had disappeared, Hank finds the police tape is gone. Approaching Junior's tree hole, Hank speaks his is one of three names he will remember along with his dad's and his own. The time at grandpa and grandma's house flew by, and when Junior returned he found out the rumors had only gotten worse where everyone thought his dad was the killer. Asking where Junior has been, the cashier reveals Ben was running errands for that Ding guy, yet it seems Junior's dad is the one in trouble. After Junior glares at the cashier, he heads to speak to his tree hole with the wish he had super powers. Afraid his grandpa and grandma will not last long, Junior also wants to find his dad and ask him why.[32]
Ben is telling his accomplices to not ask about why he was interrogated. With Junior approaching, he ignores their threats to ask what happened to Mr. Ding. With Ben saying to go ask the cops, and that Junior's dad is a murderer, Junior punches him in the manner Joshua taught him. Getting them on the ground, Junior orders Ben to tell him about Mr. Ding. Stating that Ding made him say when he saw that Joshua guy was home, and then to block him from going that way at the intersection, Ben states he didn't block him, he didn't even go that way. Seeing how Junior has dealt with Ben, others around comment how he was always being bullied and pushed to his limit, it was how he was able to kill someone.
Gathering that Hank had already asked Ben all this, Junior attempts to call him, for the phone to go to voicemail. Reaching Hank's apartment, Junior finds a woman who informs him that the previous tenants moved out. Hank sits beside Choi onboard a plane. Having made arrangements for Hank to see a doctor, Choi is surprised Hank agreed to come. An announcement details how personal electronic devices are to be turned off. Answering he has not said goodbye to his friends, Hank does not even know what he can say so the one he made does not feel sad. The plane takes off.[33]
Registering that Hank really has gone, Junior finds the lavender spray under the pillow. Spraying it and considering it is sleeping gas, Junior feels sure Hank must have left this for him. Elsewhere, Eaton has rented an apartment for Hank in the same community. Finding Eaton makes him feel relaxed, Hank appreciates he just does what is needed and goes. Finding him nothing like his dad, Hank cannot believe they are friends. Finding iced tea in the fridge, Hank feels his dad must have told Eaton. If he does not want to be found, Hank feels his dad definitely has the skills to do it.
Before Hank left, he went to find Ben and the only useful thing he got was that Ding made him block one end of the alley that had surveillance to prevent Joshua from retreating that way. Bearing in mind that his dad always pays attention to where the cameras are when he goes on walks, Hank feels his dad knew not to go in that direction. On how Joshua avoided the cameras with that kind of injury, Hank feels he must have had an accomplice and it must have been that person that called him before he left. Having a new sim card, Hank held back the impulse to call Junior, but he will not throw away the old sim card like he used to before.
Outside the apartment complex, Hank finds Eaton and they go to Li's Grill for skewers. At the table, Li brings skewers over where Eaton knows him. Having known Joshua for a long time, Eaton states he was there when Hank was born.[34]
